The prominent Bangladesh cricketers recently returned for some One Day cricket action for the first time since October 2025, as they participate in the Bangladesh Cricket League, set to conclude on March 3. The three-team competition is being played to regain some rhythm for fifty-over cricket before they face Pakistan in March.
Bangladesh’s ODI captain Mehidy Hasan Miraz has noted the long gaps between One Day games and attributed them to being a big reason behind some underperformances. Before pulling out of the ICC Men’s T20 World Cup, Bangladesh were playing a lot of T20I cricket to get ready for the event in India and Sri Lanka, hampering their ODI form.

Mehidy Hasan Miraz opens up on Bangladesh’s poor ODI form
While speaking to the media ahead of the BCL final on March 3, Miraz flagged the challenges he has faced as the skipper since taking up the role. After succeeding Najmul Hossain Shanto in 2024, Miraz has only won three of the 11 matches at the helm.
“The reason we struggled in recent ODI matches is that we played them with long gaps, and the focus at that time was on T20 cricket. Because we played ODIs with such intervals, we couldn't plan effectively. However, since we have a long road ahead with many upcoming ODI matches, we will be able to create a much better plan,” said Miraz.
Notably, as things stand right now, Bangladesh find themselves out of the direct qualification for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup 2027. The top-8 teams by March 2027 will get a direct entry in the tournament to be played in South Africa and Zimbabwe, and Bangladesh are ranked 10.
Despite this situation, the BCB has failed to give the team consistent ODI game time to build rhythm and perform at the best of their abilites in the fifty-over matches. Additionally, the fiasco between BCB and the BCCI has further added to their troubles as they remained out of international action for the whole of February.
Further gap in ODI cricket
Having played the last ODI almost 5 months ago, it will be important for Mehidy Hasan Miraz and team to quickly find their rhythm and get wins under their belts to break into the top-8 rankings. They will face Pakistan in a 3-match ODI series from March 11 at home.
As mentioned by Miraz, the BCB has again kept a long break between the Pakistan ODIs and the next series, which is scheduled in December when they will tour South Africa. In the big gap between ODIs, they will play Tests and a unilaterally announced India series is scheduled, which remains uncertain.
Bangladesh’s recent ODI struggles
Led by Najmul Shanto in the 2023 World Cup in India, Bangladesh only won two matches in the competition and finished 8th, level on points with Sri Lanka and the Netherlands. They only managed to defeat Afghanistan and Sri Lanka in the competition, and also faced a crushing 87-run loss at the hands of the Dutch.
Since the end of the tournament, they have played 23 ODIs under three different captains and lost 15 of them. They only won 7 matches and tied one in this period. These 7 wins include a 2-1 win against Sri Lanka and a 2-0 win against the West Indies.
Apart from the two series triumphs, they have been on the losing end against Afghanistan twice (0-3) and (1-2), Sri Lanka (1-2) and New Zealand (1-2). They also failed to win any games in the ICC Champions Trophy 2025.
