India accused of fixing [Source: @nibraz88cricket/X.com]
Fans lost their cool on social media after Shimron Hetmyer was surprisingly dismissed in what turned out to be a controversial moment of the India vs West Indies clash at Eden Gardens.
Hetmyer was on absolute fire during the Super 8 game of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 against India as he hammered 27 off just 12 balls.
However, just when he was posing a legitimate threat, Jasprit Bumrah got a breakthrough, which eventually turned into a controversy.

Fans target India, ICC over Shimron Hetmyer’s dismissal
In the 12th over, Jasprit Bumrah bowled a short-of-a-length delivery that angled across the left-hander. Hetmyer attempted an ambitious slog across the line but managed only a faint inside edge through to Sanju Samson behind the stumps.
Bumrah was immediately confident in his appeal, and umpire Chris Gaffaney raised the finger. Shimron Hetmyer opted for a review, as there appeared to be some doubt initially.
However, UltraEdge confirmed a spike as the ball passed the bat, vindicating the on-field decision. But many on social media believe the spike was made up and not real.
Fans argued that the third umpire took forever to bring up the UltraEdge and also accused the ICC of fixing the DRS outcome in India’s favour.
Hetmyer and West Indies coach Darren Sammy were also outraged and shocked at the decision. But the umpire had made up his mind, and the batter had to walk back.
India regain control after early bashing
That being said, India surprisingly opted to field first after winning the toss, and the West Indies made them pay instantly. Shai Hope and Roston Chase stitched a 68-run opening partnership.
Chase hammered 40 off just 25 balls, while Hope took his time to hit 32 off 33 balls. Shimron Hetmyer looked dangerous after he took on Varun Chakaravarthy for 17 runs in the 11th over.
But Jasprit Bumrah got 2 wickets in the 12th over to steal the momentum from the West Indies. At 15 overs, the Windies had 125 runs on the board at the loss of 4 wickets.
Stakes are high for both teams
Having said that, the contest is a must-win for both India and the West Indies. The winner of this game will advance to the semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026.
Both teams have two points each and are only separated by NRR. India have to ensure they win by a good margin to advance further. South Africa, notably, have already qualified for the next stage with three wins in as many games.
From Group 2, England and New Zealand have qualified for the semi-finals, as Pakistan and Sri Lanka were eliminated.
The semi-finals of the ICC T20 World Cup 2026 will begin on March 4 with South Africa taking on New Zealand at the Eden Gardens in Kolkata.
