In a recent development, the Tamim Iqbal-led ad hoc committee broke free of any legal obligations and the risk of being dissolved by the Bangladesh High Court. On May 21, the HC ruled that the petition to dissolve the committee would be dismissed, as there was no strong evidence against the body's functioning.

Significantly, there is an upcoming election on June 7, to be held by the Tamim Iqbal-led committee. The overturned legal ban will now allow the 11-member body to conduct the Bangladesh Cricket Board elections without interruption.

Tamim Iqbal and The Ad Hoc Committee

For the unaware, the National Sports Council (NSC) formed an 11-member ad-hoc committee for the BCB on April 7, 2026, with former Bangladesh captain Tamim Iqbal appointed as president.

The temporary committee was created after the dissolution of the previous BCB board amid allegations of election irregularities against Aminul Islam Bulbul.

Alongside Tamim, the panel includes former cricketers, legal experts, business figures, and sports administrators, including Minhajul Abedin Nannu, Athar Ali Khan, and several former BCB directors.

Following its formation, the Tamim-led committee immediately began restructuring board operations by assigning members to different departments such as women’s cricket, facilities, and game development.

However, a petition was filed against the body over its functioning and exercising powers as an interim organisation, which was finally revealed by the High Court.

Why Was A Petition Filed Against The Ad Hoc Committee?

The petition challenged the legality of the April 7 decision that led to the formation of the new Bangladesh Cricket Board ad-hoc committee.

It urged the court to examine whether the move, along with every decision taken by the committee since its appointment, should be treated as unlawful and invalid.

It also appealed for an interim order to halt all activities of the ad-hoc panel until the court delivers a final verdict on the matter.

Several key officials were named as respondents in the case, including representatives from the Youth and Sports Ministry, National Sports Council, BCB, the BCB election commission, and the ICC chief executive officer.

The bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim dismissed the petition against the ad hoc committee, finding no merit in issuing an order against the current governing body.

“The bench of Justice Fatema Najib and Justice AFM Saiful Karim dropped from its cause list a writ petition seeking a stay on the formation of the 11-member ad hoc committee after the dissolution of the elected BCB board.

The court, however, said the petitioners would be free to move the petition before another bench. The court dropped the petition from its cause list as it found no merit in passing an order,” the report from The Daily Star stated.

Tamim Iqbal To Change BCB’s Landscape With June Election

The Bangladesh Cricket Board is set for a major leadership overhaul through its upcoming elections on June 7, 2026. The new election process will decide the board’s long-term administration, with 23 directors being elected by 184 registered councillors.

Once those directors are confirmed, all 25 board members, including two government-appointed directors, will vote to choose the next BCB president for a four-year term. Tamim Iqbal is also expected to contest in the elections while continuing to supervise the transition phase.

The director elections will take place across three separate categories. Ten directors will come from regional and district cricket associations around the country, while 12 directors will represent Dhaka-based cricket clubs.

The remaining director will be selected from a special category that includes former Bangladesh captains, ex-cricketers, security forces, and nominees from the NSC.

BCB Election Schedule

The election schedule has already been finalised by the three-member Election Commission led by senior advocate Ahsanul Karim.

The final voter list was published on May 19, followed by nomination paper distribution on May 20 and 21. Candidates submitted their forms between May 21 and 22, while the final candidate list will be officially announced on May 25 after hearings are completed.

Postal and electronic ballots must be submitted by June 6. The final results are expected to be declared later the same evening.
