The IPL 2026 concluded with a riveting final on Sunday, as RCB defeated Gujarat Titans to bag their second trophy in the competition.

Led by Rajat Patidar, the Royal Challengers defended their title, comfortably swatting aside the Titans by five wickets in a high-octane final at the Narendra Modi Stadium.

While a 15-year-old Vaibhav Sooryavanshi grabbed the headlines for scintillating stroke-play, some veteran cricketers like Virat Kohli set the IPL 2026 ablaze with their fireworks.

As the season has marked its conclusion, here are five players who could reverse their T20I retirement based on their performances in the IPL 2026.

(Virat Kohli's IPL 2026 stats)

  • Virat Kohli emerged as RCB's top performer in the IPL 2026. The veteran batter clobbered 675 runs with the help of five half-centuries and one hundred, playing a pivotal role in his side's emphatic victory.
  • Although Kohli registered two consecutive ducks in the league stage, he made a remarkable comeback, hammering a match-winning fifty in the all-important final against Gujarat Titans.
  • Thus, despite retiring from T20Is, Virat Kohli recorded an average of 56.25 and a strike rate of 165.85, living up to the modern-day batting standards. Therefore, Virat Kohli has shown his readiness to return to T20Is and can reverse his retirement from the format if the BCCI wants him back in the shortest format.

Sunil Narine

(Sunil Narine's record in IPL 2026)

  • West Indies bowling maestro Sunil Narine announced his retirement from T20Is in 2023. However, he still proved to be KKR's most valuable asset with the ball, weaving his magic in the middle overs.
  • Narine bagged 15 wickets at a healthy strike rate of 20.40 while recording an economy of 6.65. These numbers suggest that he's still a potent bowling weapon and might serve the West Indies to perfection if the board convinces him to reverse his retirement.

Heinrich Klaasen

Strike Rate160
50s/100s6/0

(Heinrich Klaasen's IPL 2026 stats)

  • South Africa's middle-order batter Heinrich Klaasen oozed his class in IPL 2026. Although he retired from international cricket in 2025, Klaasen had no signs of slowing down as far as his ability to churn out runs was concerned.
  • The swashbuckling batter finished IPL 2026 as SRH's top run-getter, proving that he still has plenty to offer for the betterment of South African cricket. So, if he wishes to come out of retirement, Klaasen can be a valuable member of South Africa's T20I squad that will be determined to break the knockout curse and clinch the title in 2028.

Nicholas Pooran

Criterion
Data
Innings14
Runs234
Average18
Strike Rate127.87
50s/100s1/0

(Nicholas Pooran's IPL 2026 stats)

  • As evidenced by the above stats, Nicholas Pooran had a horrible time with the bat in IPL 2026. The southpaw found it tough to get going, registering a string of low scores in the tournament.
  • Notably, this is the first time in five years that Nicholas Pooran has scored less than 300 runs in an IPL season. He recorded decent numbers in 2022 and 2023 before establishing himself as the backbone of the LSG batting unit with two successive blockbuster seasons.
  • Interestingly, Pooran's batting form dipped after his international retirement. The West Indies batter retired from international cricket on June 9, 2025, and hasn't been as effective as before since then.
  • Since June 10, 2025, Nicholas Pooran has managed only 1439 T20 runs at a modest average of 29.97 and a strike rate of 130.34. These numbers speak volumes about his mediocrity and could be a roadblock to his ambitions to establish himself as one of the most valuable players in T20 leagues.
  • Therefore, although Nicholas Pooran is just 30 years old, he may consider reversing his T20I retirement not only to regain his form and confidence but also to reestablish himself as a key player in T20 leagues worldwide.

Mitchell Starc

  • Mitchell Starc had a brief yet impactful season for Delhi Capitals. The left-arm pacer scalped 11 wickets in 6 matches at a superb strike rate of 12.
  • He steamed in with lots of energy, swung the ball at rapid pace and made the top-order batters dance to his tunes. Although Mitchell Starc's economy was slightly on the higher side, the veteran Australian was still able to strike at crucial junctures for his side.
  • So, considering Australia felt the absence of a wicket-taking bowler and crashed out of the group stage in the 2026 T20 World Cup, Starc could make his T20I return. His comeback can potentially strengthen the Australian bowling attack ahead of the 2028 World Cup edition.
