In a significant development, it has been understood that Afghanistan is going to host India in a three-match T20I series in September this year.

However, interestingly, the matches will likely be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi, which will serve as the home venue for Afghanistan. Thus, Afghanistan will host the Indian team in India for the first time, making it a historic event.

Afghanistan to play three T20Is in India as host nation

The Afghanistan cricket team is all set to play a one-off Test and three ODIs against India this month. The Times of India has reported that the Afghans will return to the country in September to play a three-match T20I series against their Indian counterparts.

However, in dramatic circumstances, the Afghanistan Cricket Board (ACB) will be the hosts for the series despite India playing on their home turf.

The three-match T20I series will likely be played at the Arun Jaitley Stadium in Delhi on September 13, 16 and 19.

The report states that the ACB approached the BCCI for a return tour following the conclusion of the upcoming multi-format series between the Asian nations. As a result, the Indian board

"BCCI and ACB share a good relationship. BCCI has been helping other boards like Ireland, Sri Lanka and Zimbabwe by sending Indian teams to play a series there to boost the finances of those board. An understanding has been reached between BCCI and ACB in this regard. An official announcement will be made after a few modalities are completed," a BCCI source was quoted as saying by TOI.

BCCI continues to help Afghanistan cricket grow

This will be a historic decision by the BCCI if ACB pulls off the deal to host the Indian team in their own backyard.

Afghanistan, a country marred by geopolitical turmoil and natural disasters, has no shortage of young cricketing talents.

The likes of Mohammad Nabi, Asghar Stanikzai and Mohammad Shahzad laid a solid foundation for the Afghans to create their identity on the cricketing map.

Meanwhile, Rashid Khan, Rahmanullah Gurbaz and Noor Ahmad became the heart-throbs of the youth by putting up standout performances at the highest level.

All that the Afghanistan team lacked was a home venue due to the lack of infrastructure and advanced facilities in the war-torn country.

With the Afghanistan team desperately searching for a home venue, the BCCI came forward to help the ACB and allowed the Afghans to play their home matches at the Greater Noida Sports Complex Ground and Rajiv Gandhi International Cricket Stadium in Dehradun.

So, if the ACB officially announces the T20I series in India, Delhi's Arun Jaitley Stadium will be the third Indian ground to serve as the home venue for the Afghanistan cricket team.

India to begin 2027 World Cup preparations against Afghanistan

While the T20I series has yet to be formally announced, India and Afghanistan are scheduled to cross swords in a one-off Test in the Mullanpur Stadium from June 6 to 10.

After that, the Indians will kick-start their preparations for the 2027 World Cup with a three-match ODI series against Afghanistan. The first ODI will be played in Dharamsala, with Lucknow and Chennai hosting the subsequent encounters.
