Should Rishabh Pant Continue To Open For LSG In IPL 2026?

Rishabh Pant opening the innings for LSG in their opening game of IPL 2026 against Delhi Capitals signals a proactive tactical shift aimed at maximising his natural strokeplay.

Given Pant’s recent struggles in the middle-overs, him batting in the powerplay where field restrictions allow greater freedom, could help him regain rhythm, and consistency that has been missing in recent T20 seasons.

However, the move also impacts LSG’s established batting structure. A previously settled lineup with defined roles now faces disruption, raising concerns about balance going forward in IPL 2026.

The key question remains whether maximising Rishabh Pant’s output justifies changing a combination that had delivered consistent results for LSG previously.

Why Rishabh Pant Opening Could Work for LSG in IPL 2026

1. Proven Comfort at the Top Order (Backed by Numbers)

  • Rishabh Pant opening is not a random experiment, it taps into a role where he has shown tangible success. In 23 T20 innings as an opener, Pant has scored 672 runs at an average of 30.54 and an impressive strike rate of 158.49, indicating both stability and attacking intent.
  • However, a deeper look reveals an important nuance. A significant chunk, 469 of those 672 runs, came while playing for Delhi in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, where he averaged a remarkable 42.63 and struck at 174.34. These numbers highlight not just comfort, but dominance in that role, notably in domestic cricket.
  • That phase also included one of the most explosive innings in T20 history, a 32-ball century for Delhi back in 2018, second only to Chris Gayle’s iconic 30-ball hundred for RCB in the IPL 2013 back in the day. It showcased Pant’s ability to fully exploit the powerplay when given the license to attack from ball one.

2. Opening as a Reset to Fix His Middle-Overs Decline

  • Rishabh Pant’s move to open can also be viewed as a response to a noticeable decline in his middle-overs effectiveness. During his peak, especially pre-Covid, Rishabh Pant was one of the most dominant middle-overs batters in the IPL, averaging 47.9 while striking at 159.7 between 2017-2019, a rare combination of control and aggression.
  • However, that edge has faded over time. Since IPL 2020, his strike rate in the middle-overs has dropped to 130.3, with last season reflecting a sharper dip, an average of just 18.5 with 8 dismissals in that phase. For a player once known for dictating the tempo, this decline points toward a deeper issue rather than a temporary slump.
  • A major concern has been his inability to rotate strike consistently. Pant’s off-side game, in particular, has become increasingly predictable, allowing opposition teams to set fields and bowl patterns that restrict his scoring areas. As a result, he has often found himself stuck, neither able to sustain innings nor accelerate effectively.

Why Rishabh Pant Opening Might Not Be the Right Call for LSG in IPL 2026

1. Disrupting a Proven Opening Pair for LSG

  • The Aiden Markram–Mitchell Marsh pair was the second-most successful opening duo in IPL 2025, scoring 574 runs at 47.83 average. They provided consistent, balanced starts, one of the biggest positives for LSG’s overall batting structure.
  • Both are natural openers for their international sides. Markram, in particular, excelled in the recently concluded T20 World Cup as an opener for South Africa, striking at 165.3 with a 47.7 average. Dropping him to No.3 takes him away from his most impactful phase.
  • The shift also affects match-ups. As openers and right-handed batters, Marsh and Markram could attack left-arm spin inside the powerplay. With Markram at No.3, teams can exploit this, like Axar Patel did early, reducing LSG’s tactical flexibility significantly.

2. Weakening the Middle-Overs Flow

  • Nicholas Pooran was a major success at No.3 for LSG last season, scoring 466 runs at a staggering 201.7 strike-rate. His presence there made LSG’s top order one of the most dangerous in the tournament.
  • Pant opening pushes Pooran into a delayed role weakening the further middle-overs flow where Pooran was striking at 212.1 last year. Pooran’s game is built around entering at the right moment and counterattacking, something that gets compromised if his entry point shifts significantly.
  • Historically, Pooran’s best T20 returns have come at No.3 rather than deeper in the order. Moving him away from that position risks neutralizing one of LSG’s biggest strengths and reduces their middle-overs dominance considerably.

Final Verdict

Rishabh Pant opening for LSG in IPL 2026 is a bold and potentially rewarding move, but it should not be treated as a long-term default just yet.

The idea has merit, especially in maximising his strengths during the powerplay, but it comes at the cost of disturbing a well settled batting lineup.

LSG should treat this as a situational tactic rather than a fixed strategy, as Pant himself also clarified after the game

If he consistently provides impactful starts without significantly disturbing the rest of the batting order, the move is justified. However, if the team’s overall balance is affected, going back to the previous structure would be the smarter option.
