Chennai Super Kings are ready to face Punjab Kings in their second match of IPL 2026. The match will take place at the MA Chidambaram Stadium in Chennai on Friday, April 3. CSK are coming after a disappointing loss, while PBKS have started their season with a strong win.
Therefore, this game becomes very important for CSK as they aim to bounce back in front of their home crowd.
CSK vs PBKS Preview
Under the leadership of Ruturaj Gaikwad and in the absence of MS Dhoni, CSK had a weak start to their campaign. Their first match against Rajasthan Royals did not go as planned, and the team struggled in all departments.
The batting lineup failed to build partnerships, and as a result, CSK were bowled out for just 127 runs in 19.4 overs. Sanju Samson, who was playing his first match for CSK, scored only six runs, and that added to the team’s early troubles.
At one stage, CSK were in deep trouble at 94 for 9. However, Jamie Overton played a fighting knock of 43 runs from 36 balls. His effort helped the team reach a slightly better total. Even then, the score was not enough to challenge Royals.
The opposition chased the target quickly in just 12.1 overs, winning the match by eight wickets. A young player, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi, impressed everyone with a quick half-century.
On the other hand, Punjab Kings had a positive start to their season. They defeated Gujarat Titans by three wickets in a close match. Cooper Connolly, a young left-handed batter, played a brilliant innings of 72 runs from 44 balls in his debut game. His performance helped PBKS secure the win.
As a result, CSK will need to improve their performance in batting, bowling, and fielding. This match at home gives them a good chance to come back stronger.
The team management may also look at a few changes in the playing XI depending on conditions and player fitness. Let’s take a look at the CSK predicted playing XI vs PBKS
Openers and Top Order (Ruturaj Gaikwad, Sanju Samson, Ayush Mhatre/ Urvil Patel)
CSK’s top order did not perform well in the last match. Ruturaj Gaikwad and Sanju Samson both scored only six runs each. Even then, the team is likely to continue with them as they are experienced and reliable players. CSK will show trust in their abilities and expect a better performance in this match.
At number three, Ayush Mhatre struggled and got out without scoring. Therefore, CSK might consider bringing in Urvil Patel. It is important to mention that last season, Urvil played a few matches for CSK in the previous season and showed his attacking style. This change could give more strength to the top order.

Middle Order and All Rounders (Sarfaraz Khan, Matthew Short, Shivam Dube,Kartik Sharma)
The middle order might also see some changes after the last match. Sarfaraz Khan could be included in the CSK’s playing XI from the start. In the last game, Sarfaraz came as an impact player and scored 17 runs from 12 balls. Considering that, his presence can add stability to the batting lineup.
Matthew Short is expected to bat at number five. There is also a possibility that Dewald Brevis could return if he is fit. Notably, Brevis missed the last match due to a side strain. If he is available, he can replace Short and strengthen the batting.
Meanwhile Shivam Dube had a poor start and got out without scoring. Even then, he remains an important player for the team. Dube can be used in different positions depending on the situation. For example, he can be promoted if the team needs quick runs against spin bowling.
Kartik Sharma showed some promise in the previous match by scoring 18 runs. He is expected to play the role of a finisher and support the team in the final overs.
Bowlers (Jamie Overton, Noor Ahmad, Khaleel Ahmed, Anshul Kamboj)
In the bowling department, Khaleel Ahmed will lead the pace attack. Anshul Kamboj also impressed in the last match with two wickets. His performance will give confidence to the team.
Jamie Overton will continue to play a key role as an all-rounder. His batting helped the team in the previous match, and he can also contribute with the ball.
Noor Ahmad will handle the spin attack. His role becomes very important, especially on a Chennai pitch where spin usually plays a big part.
There is also a chance that Matt Henry could be used as an impact player depending on the match situation. His experience can be useful in pressure moments.
