Mohammed Shami etched his name in the history books during the IPL 2026 clash between Lucknow Super Giants and Delhi Capitals at Ekana Stadium on April 1. Although LSG suffered a six-wicket defeat, Mohammed Shami's remarkable achievement became the highlight of the match.
Talking about the match, Delhi Capitals captain Axar Patel won the toss and decided to bowl first. LSG had struggled with the bat in the first innings, managing only 141 runs in 18.4 overs. Contributions from Abdul Samad and Mitchell Marsh were not enough to build a competitive total.
DC bowlers T Natarajan and Lungi Ngidi led the attack with three wickets each, and Kuldeep Yadav bagged two wickets.
Sameer Rizvi's heroics guides Delhi Capitals
The star of the chase was young batter Sameer Rizvi, who played a composed and match-winning knock under pressure for Delhi Capitals. Walking in at a precarious 21 for 2, Sameer Rizvi anchored the innings brilliantly with an unbeaten 70 off 47 balls at strike-rate of 148.94.
Delhi Capitals found themselves in deep trouble early on, slipping to 26 for 4 within the first five overs. However, Sameer Rizvi, coming in as an Impact Substitute, showed maturity beyond his years. He built a crucial unbeaten partnership of 119 runs with Tristan Stubbs, who contributed a steady 39 not out.

Sameer Rizvi initially played cautiously against a disciplined bowling attack led by Mohammed Shami, Mohsin Khan, and Prince Yadav. Once settled, he shifted gears, taking advantage of loose deliveries and maintaining control of the chase.
A turning point came during the 10th over when Sameer Rizvi attacked Shahbaz Ahmed, collecting 16 runs in the over. From there, the momentum completely shifted in DC’s favour.
Mohammed Shami's performance and record
Mohammed Shami, the experienced pacer, made a dream start for his new franchise (LSG) by dismissing KL Rahul on the very first ball of the innings.
With this breakthrough, Shami became the first bowler in IPL history to take a wicket on the opening ball of an innings five times, a feat unmatched in the tournament's history.
Most first ball wicket in IPL history:
- 5 - Mohammed Shami
- 3 - Pravin Kumar
- 3 - Umesh Yadav
- 3 - Trent Boult
- 3 - Lasith Malinga
- 3 - Bhuvneshwar Kumar
- 3 - Ashok Dinda
- 3 - Pat Cummins
Mohammed Shami’s performance finished with figures of 1 for 28 in four overs, maintaining control and extracting movement throughout his spell.
Despite Shami’s early success, Delhi Capitals chased down the modest target of 142 with ease, reaching 145 for 4 in just 17.1 overs to begin their campaign on a winning note.
Taking a look at Shami's record in IPL, the ace pacer has played for a total of six franchises -KKR, Delhi Capitals, Punjab Kings, Gujarat Titans, Sunrisers Hyderabad and LSG. He played in 120 matches and bagged 134 wickets at an economy rate of 8.61.
It is important to note that LSG will play their next match against SRH on April 5 at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in Hyderabad. On the other hand, DC will play its next match against the Mumbai Indians on April 4 at Arun Jaitley Stadium.
