IPL 2026 has finally come to an end after weeks of thrilling cricket action. All ten teams fought hard throughout the tournament, and fans witnessed several memorable moments along the way. In the end, Royal Challengers Bengaluru defeated Gujarat Titans in the final on Sunday and lifted their second IPL trophy.
Moreover, the season featured several outstanding individual performances that played a major role in their teams' success. At the same time, a few overseas stars failed to live up to the expectations placed on them. These players arrived with strong reputations and massive price tags. However, their IPL 2026 campaigns did not go according to plan.
Here is a look at five international players who turned out to be the biggest disappointments of this season.
5 International Flops In IPL 2026
Matheesha Pathirana
Matheesha Pathirana tops this list after enduring a difficult season with Kolkata Knight Riders. The Sri Lankan pacer was one of the franchise's biggest investments at the IPL 2026 auction, with KKR spending a massive ₹18 crore to secure his services.
The franchise expected Pathirana to become a match-winning weapon, especially during the death overs. His unique bowling action and ability to deliver under pressure made him one of the most exciting overseas signings. Unfortunately, things unfolded very differently.
Notably, Pathirana suffered an injury during the 2026 T20 World Cup. As a result, he received a NOC from SLC only after KKR had already played four matches. Even after joining the squad, he remained on the bench for several games.
Eventually, he made his debut in KKR's 12th match as an Impact Player. Sadly, his appearance lasted only eight deliveries before he injured his hamstring and had to leave the field. Soon afterward, he was ruled out of the remainder of the tournament.
Considering the huge investment and the limited contribution, Pathirana undoubtedly became one of the biggest flops of this season. Furthermore, there is growing speculation that KKR could release him ahead of the next season.
Marco Jansen
Marco Jansen entered IPL 2026 in excellent form. The South African all-rounder had enjoyed a successful T20 World Cup campaign, claiming 11 wickets in six innings. In addition, he scored 73 runs from three innings at a remarkable strike rate of 169.77.
Therefore, expectations surrounding him were extremely high. However, his IPL season failed to match those standards. With the ball, Jansen managed only nine wickets in 12 innings while conceding runs at an economy rate of 10.20.
Meanwhile, his batting contributions were also limited, as he scored only 51 runs across five innings at a strike rate of 113.33.

The disappointment becomes even more noticeable when compared to his previous IPL season. In IPL 2025, Jansen picked up 16 wickets in 14 matches and impressed many with his performances.
Consequently, fans expected another impactful season from the talented all-rounder. Instead, this season turned into a frustrating campaign that never truly got going.
Dewald Brevis
Dewald Brevis was another overseas player who entered the season with plenty of excitement surrounding him.
During the previous season with Chennai Super Kings, the young South African showcased glimpses of his enormous talent and looked ready for a breakthrough year. As a result, many expected him to become one of CSK's key middle-order batters in IPL 2026.
Notably, CSK struggled throughout the season, especially in the middle order. Therefore, Brevis had a great opportunity to establish himself as a dependable performer.
Retained for ₹2.2 crore, he featured in 11 matches and scored 151 runs at an average of 18.88 and a strike rate of 127.97.
In addition, he found it difficult to adapt during low-scoring contests or situations that required patience.
Scores such as 2 off 9 balls and 8 off 10 balls against Gujarat Titans reflected those struggles. Although there were occasional flashes of brilliance, consistency remained a major issue.
Therefore, despite the talent he possesses, Brevis failed to make the impact many expected this season.
Shimron Hetmyer
Shimron Hetmyer has been one of Rajasthan Royals' most valuable players over the years. His ability to finish matches and score quickly during the death overs made him an important part of the franchise. Recognising his value, Rajasthan Royals retained him for ₹11 crore ahead of the season.
Furthermore, Hetmyer entered the IPL after a brilliant T20 World Cup campaign. He scored 248 runs at an average of 41.33 and an impressive strike rate of 186.46.
Unfortunately, things never clicked for Hetmyer during IPL 2026. Across seven innings, he managed only 78 runs at a strike rate of 113.04. His usual aggressive approach was missing, and he struggled to influence matches.
Meanwhile, Rajasthan Royals still enjoyed a successful campaign and reached the playoffs. Their top-order batters and bowlers consistently delivered strong performances throughout the tournament.
However, Hetmyer could not provide the finishing power that the team had relied upon in previous seasons. As a result, IPL 2026 became one of the toughest campaigns of his IPL career.
Jacob Bethell
Royal Challengers Bengaluru may have ended IPL 2026 as champions, yet young England batter Jacob Bethell could not enjoy the same level of success individually.
Bethell arrived at the tournament following an outstanding T20 World Cup campaign. He scored 280 runs in seven innings at a strike rate of 152.17.
One of his most memorable performances came in the semi-final against India, where he scored a brilliant century under pressure. As a result, many believed he would become one of the breakout stars of IPL 2026.
Initially, Bethell found it difficult to secure a place in the RCB playing XI. Later, he received an opportunity following an injury to fellow England cricketer Phil Salt.
Even then, things did not improve significantly. Across seven innings, Bethell scored only 96 runs at an average of 13.71 and a strike rate of 124.68. The aggressive batting that made him successful on the international stage was rarely seen during the IPL season.
To make matters worse, his campaign ended early after he suffered a finger injury and was forced to return to the United Kingdom ahead of the IPL playoffs.
Although RCB celebrated a title-winning season, Bethell’s individual performance fell well short of expectations.
