The Royal Challengers Bengaluru (RCB) stalwart produced a captain's knock without the captaincy, guiding Rajat Patidar-led RCB to a five-wicket victory over Gujarat Titans in the IPL 2026 final at the Narendra Modi Stadium in Ahmedabad on Sunday, May 31.
With the win, RCB secured their second IPL title and added another glorious chapter to the franchise's history.
RCB Bowlers Lay The Foundation Against Gujarat Titans
After being invited to bat first, Gujarat Titans never managed to gain complete control of the contest. RCB's disciplined bowling attack kept the scoring rate in check and picked up wickets at regular intervals.
Washington Sundar fought hard with an unbeaten 50 off 37 deliveries, while Nishant Sindhu chipped in with 20 runs from 18 balls. However, the rest of the batting unit struggled to make an impact as Gujarat finished with a modest 155/8 in their allotted 20 overs.

Virat Kohli's Masterclass Seals The IPL Trophy
Chasing 156 in a high-pressure final, RCB made a confident start through Venkatesh Iyer and Virat Kohli. The duo stitched together a 62-run opening partnership, placing the Bengaluru side firmly in control.
Iyer played a brisk knock of 32 from just 16 balls before Gujarat fought back and reduced RCB to 132/5. At that stage, the game briefly opened up. However, Kohli remained unfazed.
The former India captain anchored the chase beautifully, finishing unbeaten on 75 off 42 deliveries, an innings decorated with nine boundaries and three sixes. He also brought up the fastest IPL fifty of his career, reaching the landmark in only 25 balls.
It is important to note that Virat Kohli's brilliance earned him the Player of the Match award in the final.
Virat Kohli Sends Strong Message On Experience After Guiding RCB to IPL 2026 Title
Shortly after the triumph, Kohli's comments during the post-match presentation grabbed attention.
Notably, many fans interpreted the remarks as an indirect message aimed at young stars such as Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma, who have become known for their fearless brand of cricket.
"We have a lot of mature players in the group, a lot of experienced guys, and the experience always shines through in difficult situations. You can have all the excitement and slam-bang in the world, but come the big situations, you need the big boys to step up. And that’s exactly what we did, " Virat Kohli said.
Notably, Kohli's comments came at a time when several senior players have been questioned over their age and relevance in modern cricket.
However, the RCB star has silenced critics with a sensational IPL 2026 campaign, proving that experience remains crucial in pressure situations. While young stars Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma impressed with their explosive batting throughout the season, their teams failed to reach the final.
Kohli, meanwhile, delivered when it mattered most, guiding RCB to the title. With talks around the 2027 ODI World Cup already underway, the veteran batter has once again proved his value on the biggest stage.
