The Indian Premier League 2026 have concluded successfully on May 31 with Royal Challengers Bengaluru lifting the trophy for the second time after 2025. As the Rajat Patidar-led team basked in the glory of a win, concluding a 2.5-month-long tournament, not every part of it was celebratory.

As 10 franchises clashed, multiple controversial moments added to the heat in the massive league. From Arshdeep Singh's Instagram reel ban to Virat Kohli’s furious side, let’s take a look at some of the most controversial incidents of IPL 2026.

10. Jason Holder’s Controversial Catch To Dismiss Rajat Patidar

A low diving catch by Jason Holder during Gujarat Titans' clash against RCB created one of IPL 2026's fiercest umpiring debates.

Holder slid forward and claimed a catch to dismiss Rajat Patidar, but replays appeared inconclusive regarding whether the ball brushed the grass during the process.

The third umpire eventually ruled Patidar out, concluding that Holder maintained sufficient control and had fingers underneath the ball.

Virat Kohli, Andy Flower, and the RCB camp were visibly furious, arguing that the evidence did not conclusively support the dismissal. The incident sparked days of debate over MCC Law 33 and the interpretation of clean catches during sliding fielding attempts.

9. Arshdeep Singh’s Instagram Reel Controversy

Punjab Kings pacer Arshdeep Singh found himself at the centre of a social media storm after deleting more than 200 Instagram posts, including a viral reel featuring Virat Kohli that had amassed over 200 million views.

The move came after multiple controversies throughout IPL 2026. Arshdeep faced backlash over an alleged colourist remark directed at Tilak Varma, criticism surrounding his vlogging content.

Reports also suggested that the BCCI had warned players against excessive content creation during active tournaments. Although Arshdeep never publicly explained the purge, fans interpreted it as an attempt to clean up his online image.

8. Angkrish Raghuvanshi’s Obstructing The Field Dismissal

Kolkata Knight Riders youngster Angkrish Raghuvanshi became only the fourth batter in IPL history to be dismissed for obstructing the field during a match against Lucknow Super Giants.

The controversy unfolded when Raghuvanshi attempted a quick single before being sent back by Cameron Green. As he turned and sprinted toward the crease, Mohammed Shami's throw struck his pads.

After an appeal, the TV umpire ruled that Raghuvanshi had changed his running line without probable cause and obstructed a potential run-out attempt.

The controversy intensified when Raghuvanshi was additionally fined for slamming his bat in frustration after the dismissal.

7. Rajasthan Royals Dugout Mobile Phone Scandal

Rajasthan Royals team manager Romi Bhinder triggered anti-corruption concerns after television cameras caught him using a mobile phone inside the dugout during a match against RCB.

Under IPL and ICC regulations, communication devices are strictly prohibited in the Players and Match Officials Area to prevent any possibility of external interference. The footage immediately attracted attention from fans and anti-corruption experts.

Bhinder later apologized and explained that the usage was inadvertent and related to medical reasons. While the Anti-Corruption Unit found no evidence of malicious intent, the BCCI deemed the explanation insufficient and imposed a ₹1 lakh fine.

6. Riyan Parag’s Dressing Room Vaping Incident

Rajasthan Royals captain Riyan Parag landed in controversy after live broadcast cameras captured him vaping inside the dressing room during a match against Punjab Kings.

The footage quickly went viral, sparking debates about professionalism, player responsibility, and India's ban on electronic cigarettes.

Although the IPL Code of Conduct does not specifically mention vaping, the BCCI charged Parag under Article 2.21 for conduct that could bring the game into disrepute. He was fined 25% of his match fee and handed a demerit point.

5. Sunrisers Hyderabad’s Official Complaint Against BCCI Umpiring

Sunrisers Hyderabad formally approached the BCCI after a series of controversial umpiring decisions that they believed unfairly impacted their campaign.

The franchise highlighted three major incidents. Heinrich Klaasen's disputed catch dismissal against RCB, Abhishek Sharma's controversial catch against KKR, and the Avesh Khan boundary interference incident against LSG.

The latter became the primary point after Avesh appeared to interact with a live ball near the boundary rope before it crossed the line.

SRH argued that the action should have attracted penalties under MCC laws. While none of the decisions were overturned, the franchise's formal protest brought widespread attention to the standard of umpiring and third-umpire reviews in IPL 2026.

4. Gujarat Titans vs Rajasthan Royals Double Toss Controversy

One of the most unusual administrative controversies of IPL 2026 occurred before Qualifier 2 between Gujarat Titans and Rajasthan Royals.

During the toss, Riyan Parag called "Heads," but match referee Prakash Bhatt claimed he did not hear the call clearly. Although the coin landed in Gujarat's favour, the referee declared the toss invalid and ordered a second flip.

On the second attempt, Rajasthan won the toss and elected to bat first. Shubman Gill was visibly frustrated, arguing that Gujarat had effectively won the original toss.

3. Tim David Middle-Finger Gesture Controversy

Royal Challengers Bengaluru batter Tim David landed in controversy during IPL 2026 after he was caught on live television showing a middle-finger gesture from the RCB dugout following a dramatic two-wicket win over Mumbai Indians on May 11 in Raipur.

The incident gained widespread attention because it came against his former franchise, which had released him before the mega auction.

The BCCI subsequently found David guilty of breaching Article 2.6 of the IPL Code of Conduct, which prohibits obscene or offensive gestures. He was fined 30% of his match fee and handed two demerit points

2. Virat Kohli vs Travis Head Handshake Snub Controversy

One of the most controversial moments of IPL 2026 involved Virat Kohli and Travis Head following SRH's victory over RCB.

The controversy came from an intense mid-match sledging exchange in which Head reportedly challenged Kohli's batting, while Kohli sarcastically referenced Head's role.

After Kohli's dismissal, Head allegedly taunted him by pointing out that he got out before Head even had a chance to bowl. The rivalry escalated after the match when Kohli appeared to ignore Head's extended handshake during the traditional post-match line-up.

1. Virat Kohli vs Shubman Gill IPL Final Catch Controversy

The biggest controversy of IPL 2026 came during the IPL Final between RCB and Gujarat Titans. Virat Kohli, batting on 63, appeared to offer a catch to Shubman Gill, who completed a forward-diving effort and immediately celebrated.

However, Kohli refused to leave the crease and confronted Gill directly, insisting that the ball had touched the ground. A heated verbal exchange followed in front of a packed Narendra Modi Stadium before the decision was referred upstairs.

After reviewing multiple angles, the third umpire overturned the catch and ruled Kohli not out, confirming that the ball had grazed the turf.

The controversy was magnified by existing tension between the two players from earlier in the match. Kohli then went on to score an unbeaten 75 and lead RCB to the title.
