India had a forgettable outing in the T20I series against England, as the hosts annihilated them by 4-0 in the five-match series. After the first match in Chester-le-Street was called off due to rain, the Indian team lost four consecutive games to be displaced from the top position in the ICC T20I rankings.

Led by Shreyas Iyer, the Indian team has failed to win a single match on the UK tour, losing six games against Ireland and England combined. The team's abysmal run has drawn massive criticism for the players as well as the support staff, who will undergo a performance review, set to be conducted by the BCCI after the conclusion of the England tour.

In such a scenario, the Indian players are under immense pressure to deliver in the ODIs and conclude the England tour on a high note.

The challenge will be different altogether, and India will have their experienced players back, with Shubman Gill, Virat Kohli, Rohit Sharma, KL Rahul and Jasprit Bumrah set to participate in the ODI leg.

There will also be some high-profile names who might warm the bench throughout the three-match series for several reasons.

As the tourists prepare for the opening ODI, here we analyse and find out three players who might not play a game in the three-match series, starting on July 14 at Edgbaston.

3 Indian players who might not play a single ODI vs England

1. Ishan Kishan

Ishan Kishan has been a regular face in India's T20I playing XI for quite a while now. Although the southpaw played a significant role in the team's T20 World Cup 2026 victory, Ishan had an underwhelming campaign in Ireland and England, managing 135 runs across seven innings at an average of 19.28.

Considering Ishan's inconsistency coincided with Sanju Samson's lean patch, which saw him score only 33 runs in four innings, the former got a long rope in the Ireland and England T20Is. However, the scenario is quite different as far as India's team selection process for the ODIs is concerned.

Although Ishan Kishan is listed as a wicketkeeper in the squad, KL Rahul remains India's first-choice keeper-batter in ODI cricket. Rahul has been a proven performer in the 50-over format, amassing 1849 runs at a solid average of 57.78 at numbers 5 and 6 combined.

Additionally, in the ODI series against Afghanistan, Ishan Kishan played at 3 and 4, spots that will be taken by Virat Kohli and Shreyas Iyer, respectively, in the England series.

So, given that he recently flopped in England and Rahul, Kohli and Iyer are India's first-choice batters, Ishan might warm the bench throughout the three-match series.

2. Kuldeep Yadav

Experienced spinner Kuldeep Yadav has been one of the proven wicket-takers for India in the middle overs in ODI cricket. Statistically, Kuldeep has scalped 194 wickets in 121 ODIs, registering an impressive strike rate of 32 and an economy of 5.07.

However, the recent trend suggests India's inclination to have eight batting options, including a bowling allrounder at number eight, in ODIs. Harshit Rana used to fill the No. 8 slot, but since he has been ruled out of the series with a hamstring injury, Washington Sundar could fill his spot in the lineup.

The Gautam Gambhir-led management has historically prioritised multidimensional players over specialist bowlers, an argument which further indicates the likes of Axar Patel and Washington Sundar could be ahead of Kuldeep in the pecking order.

So, despite being one of India's leading wicket-takers, Kuldeep Yadav could miss out on selection, with Axar Patel and Washington Sundar likely to get into the playing XI as spinners who can be handy with the bat lower down the order.

3. Suryansh Shedge

Young allrounder Suryansh Shedge made it into the Indian team after having an eventful series for India-A on their tour to Sri Lanka.

The Punjab Kings star had a torrid start to his international career, though, managing only eight runs and going wicketless across two T20I matches in Ireland and England combined.

As Hardik Pandya and Nitish Kumar Reddy are injured, India will likely prioritise Shivam Dube as their first-choice seam-bowling allrounder in the ODI series against England.

Dube has performed much better than Shedge on the UK tour, scoring 130 runs and scalping five wickets.

Given that he is experienced and India are searching for a backup for the injury-prone duo of Pandya and Reddy, Dube is expected to get a consistent run in the England ODIs, meaning Suryansh Shedge could be benched throughout the series.
