In a major development, the BCCI made one significant change in the India T20I squad for the upcoming series against Zimbabwe. Led by Shreyas Iyer, India succumbed to two embarrassing T20I series defeats on the UK tour.

After being whitewashed by Ireland for the first time in history, the Indian team was comprehensively outclassed by Harry Brook's England, which swatted them aside by 4-0 in a five-match series.

Ahead of their Zimbabwe tour, which will see the Men in Blue face the home team in three T20Is, the BCCI decided to make a notable change to the India squad following Varun Chakaravarthy's hamstring injury.

What change did BCCI make in India's T20I squad vs Zimbabwe?

As revealed by several media houses, including Sportstar, the BCCI has approved Ravi Bishnoi as Varun Chakaravarthy's replacement in the India T20I squad vs Zimbabwe.

Veteran spinner Varun Chakaravarthy's career has been marred by fitness setbacks of late. The right-arm spinner, who played a pivotal role in India's historic third T20 World Cup win on home soil, missed a number of IPL matches for Kolkata Knight Riders due to multiple fractures in his toes as well as fingers.

Although he returned to cricketing action for a brief period, Chakaravarthy had to be sidelined from the India vs England T20I series midway due to a freshly sustained hamstring injury.

On July 9, the day when the Shreyas Iyer-led Indian team faced England in the fourth T20I in Bristol, the BCCI released an official press release, stating that Chakaravarthy and Harshit Rana would miss the remainder of the series due to hamstring injuries.

Later, several reliable media reports claimed that the Indian cricket board had finalised Ravi Bishnoi as Varun Chakaravarthy's replacement in the India T20I squad vs Zimbabwe.

According to Sportstar, the BCCI took the call after consulting with VVS Laxman, who will serve as India's stand-in head coach on the Zimbabwe tour in the absence of Gautam Gambhir.

Ravi Bishnoi gets a second chance to redeem himself

With Kuldeep Yadav focusing on ODI cricket ahead of the 2027 World Cup, Varun Chakaravarthy is India's frontline spinner in T20Is.

However, his untimely hamstring injury is a blessing in disguise for Ravi Bishnoi, who is searching for a string of breakthrough performances to secure his place in India's T20I squad.

The right-arm leg-spinner, who once emerged as Yuzvendra Chahal's biggest competitor, lost his place in the team due to inconsistent form following the home series against New Zealand.

However, some of his useful contributions for Rajasthan Royals in the IPL 2026 scripted Ravi Bishnoi's comeback, as he made it into the India squads for the Ireland and England tours.

Although he was given an opportunity to showcase his mettle in England, Bishnoi was hammered for 60 runs in four overs, going wicketless in the second T20I of the series at the Old Trafford.

Therefore, Varun Chakaravarthy's hamstring injury opens the door for the experienced spinner to regain his mojo by putting up impactful performances in Zimbabwe. Overall, he has played 46 T20Is for India, scalping 64 wickets at a healthy strike rate of 16.2 and an economy of 7.58.
