Whenever the under-rated stories from India’s T20 World Cup 2026 triumph will be discussed in retrospect, Shivam Dube’s journey will stand out among all. Amidst the discussions on the top order’s batting masterclass and the struggling middle order, Dube was a silver lining that most of the experts didn’t talk about.

It is not about taking anything away from the top performers for India in the T20 World Cup 2026. But Shivam Dube was more on the receiving end of criticism for his expensive bowling in a few innings than the praise for his impactful knocks that rescued the holders in delicate, tough situations.

Notably, Dube scored 235 runs in eight innings at a brilliant average of 39.16 and a strike rate of 169.06, hitting half-century, alongside claiming five wickets in five innings with the ball. Therefore, this article evaluates how Shivam Dube silently became India’s silent ‘Player of The Tournament’ (POTT) with his much-needed but less talked-about performances.

Shivam Dube’s impeccable response to tough situations in group stage

Shivam Dube ended up with a golden duck, being a part of India’s batting collapse in the campaign opener against the USA. But it was the first and last instance of its kind for Dube in the T20 World Cup 2026, as he never turned back after that throughout the entire tournament.

In the second game against Namibia, India collapsed again, this time after a decent second-wicket partnership. From 205/4 in 18.2 overs, India finished on 209/9 in 20 overs. Meanwhile, it was Shivam Dube’s 23-run knock off 16 balls with one four and a six that took his side past 200.

Furthermore, he delivered another impactful knock (27 off 17 balls) at a tricky track in Colombo. His knock played a vital role in helping India post 175/7 in the first innings to win the game by a big margin of 61 runs.

The stage was all set again for Dube to rescue his side after a sluggish start against the Netherlands in their last group-stage clash. He came to bat at number five when India had lost three wickets for 69 runs in nine overs.

The southpaw went on to smash 66 runs off just 31 balls, with four fours and six sixes. Later in the second innings, he also claimed two wickets for 35 runs in three overs to play a crucial role in India’s 17-run win against the Dutchmen. He also won the player of the match award for his all-round performance.

The ‘man of clutch moments’ in Super-8

In the Super-8 stage, India faced South Africa in their first clash, where the hosts were brutally humiliated by the Proteas. When the entire batting line-up of India was wrapped at just 111 runs while chasing a 188-run target, Shivam Dube took the sole fight against the South Africa’s bowling attack.

He scored a face-saving 42 runs off 37 balls for India to reduce the intensity of embarrassment in the first Super-8 game. Later in India's exhibition of power-hitting against Zimbabwe, Dube didn’t come to bat.

After securing a comfortable 72-run win against Zimbabwe to stay alive in contention for the knockouts, India were set to take on the West Indies in a virtual quarter-final. It was also the last Super-8 game for both teams, and the winning side would qualify for the semi-finals.

The impactful two fours that eased India’s knockout entry

The Caribbean side posted a tough total of 195 runs for the loss of four wickets in the first innings. While chasing the 196-run target in the must-win game against West Indies, India’s batting mostly revolved around the eventual ‘player of the match’, Sanju Samson.

Samson was the axis that calmly survived the fall of wickets around him. But when India needed 15 runs off the last 10 balls, Shivam Dube once again raised his hands with two fours off Shamar Joseph on the third and the fifth balls of the 19th over.

Dube’s first four towards midwicket reduced the required runs to 11 off eight balls, before Joseph managed to execute a dot on the fourth ball. But Dube once again found a sharp gap towards the backward point and short third man for a four as Joseph missed the yorker.

These two fours released the entire pressure of India as they now needed just seven runs off the last six balls. The rest of the job was done by Sanju Samson (97 off just 50 balls) with a six and a four off the first two balls of the last over to clinch a five-wicket win for India.

Decisive and game-changing knocks in semi-final and final

India’s record-breaking 253-run total in the first innings of the semi-final against England was once again led by Sanju Samson (89 off 42 balls). But like all other games prior to this, how would this game have gone without the ‘Shivam Dube’ touch into it and its impact on the result.

Before falling prey to his third dismissal, only in run-out in the T20 World Cup 2026, Dube smashed 43 runs off just 25 balls, with one four and four sixes. His knock had a central role in helping India go past 250.  Interestingly, India’s narrow win by a margin of just seven runs in this semi-final game underscores how important Dube’s knock was that day.

For one more time, Dube was again compelled to survive a do-or-die situation when India faced an unexpected collapse after an explosive start against New Zealand in the tournament’s summit clash.  Living up to the expectations, Dube smashed 26 runs off just eight balls, with three fours and two sixes to help India post a mammoth total of 255/5 in the first innings.

It also happened to be the highest-ever total in a final in the T20 World Cup history, which they easily defended and won the game by 96 runs. Hence, Shivam Dube’s significant contributions in almost every game, despite three unfortunate run-outs, reflect the impact of his presence and performance on the team’s successful World T20 journey.

So, one can not deny the fact that ‘Shivam Dube was the silent POTT for India in the T20 World Cup 2026 minus an official announcement’.
