New Zealand’s ‘almost perfect’ T20 World Cup 2026 campaign ended on a tough note with one step short of glory. The Blackcaps faced a massive 96-run defeat against the defending champions, India, in the final. The Kiwi skipper Mitchell Santner won the toss and asked the hosts to bat first.

Suryakumar Yadav’s men posted a mammoth total of 255 runs for the loss of five wickets in the allotted 20 overs. The Blackcaps' bowling attack looked completely clueless against India’s mighty batting lineup.

Besides that, the Kiwis collapsed while chasing the target against the Indian bowling attack led by the star pace spearhead Jasprit Bumrah. Hence, here’s a look at the Kiwi players who have played their last T20 World Cup.

New Zealand Players Who Have Played Their Last T20 WC

Daryl Mitchell

The veteran batter, Daryl Mitchell, endured a dismal run of form in the recently concluded T20 World Cup 2026. He could score just 80 runs in five innings with an average of just 20.00 and a strike rate of 125.00.

Besides that, he has been going through a struggling phase with the bat since the T20 World Cup 2024. The southpaw has scored 583 runs in 27 innings at an average of 29.15 and a strike rate of 146.48, hitting only one half-century.

Conway, already being 34, is also a factor that could compel the team management to think about the young players to include in the T20I mix.

Mitchell Santner

Skipper Mitchell Santner has led his side in 53 T20Is since 2020, including both part-time and the ongoing full-time captaincy stint. In these matches, the Kiwi team’s performances in bilateral assignments against the big teams like India, England, and Australia have been alarming.

New Zealand have won only two games against India, while losing eight. Against England and Australia, they haven’t won a game in this span. Besides that, his performances as a bowler have also seen a severe dip since the conclusion of the T20 World Cup 2024. He has claimed just 22 wickets in 28 innings at an economy rate of 7.82 and a very costly strike rate of 28.

Given that, the New Zealand team management might look forward to moving on from Santner, given the age factor as well. So, the Blackcaps might be led by a young captain.

Devon Conway

Unfortunately, the senior batter, Devon Conway, didn’t get a match to play for his side in the T20 World Cup 2026. Apart from that, he has also been struggling with the bat in the T20Is for the last two years.

Since the T20 World Cup 2024, Conway has aggregated just 331 runs in 14 innings at a ‘below par’ average of just 27.58 and a strike rate of 133.46. He scored only two half-centuries in this span, failing to play a vital role in any of New Zealand’s big wins.

So, the 34-year-old is also expected to be sidelined after the recent debacle in the T20 World Cup 2026. So, the recently concluded 10th edition of the T20 World Cup was probably the last-ever T20 World Cup for Conway as a member of the New Zealand squad.

Ish Sodhi

The experienced leg-spinner, Ish Sodhi, didn’t have an expected tour of India and Sri Lanka as a part of the New Zealand team for the T20 World Cup 2026. He hasn’t been given a game in the tournament, and unfortunately, the game for which he was included in the final XI was washed out due to rain.

Speaking of his bowling performances in the T20Is since the ninth World T20 in 2024, he hasn’t lived up to the expectations, except for a four-wicket haul. He has scalped just 24 wickets in 21 innings at an expensive economy rate of 9.13 and a strike rate of 15.4.

Therefore, Sodhi might also be shown the exit doors by the management on their way to prepare for the tournament’s next edition. They are more likely to invest in the young spin-bowling all-rounders like Rachin Ravindra.

James Neesham

James Neesham was the oldest member (by age and experience) in New Zealand’s T20 World Cup 2026 squad. Notably, the T20 World Cup 2026 final between India and New Zealand was the 100th T20I for the Auckland-born flamboyant all-rounder in his illustrious international career.

The 35-year-old delivered a brilliant bowling performance in the final against India, scalping three wickets in a single over. He ended up with the figures of three wickets for 46 runs in his four overs. But he has been struggling a lot with the bat since the last T20 World Cup, scoring just 97 runs in 10 innings.

On the other hand, James Neesham has decent bowling numbers, with 23 wickets in 18 innings, including a five-wicket haul and a bowling strike rate of 12.1. But on the broader note, his age and batting form, alongside his declining ability to contain runs with the ball, could be the major concerns for New Zealand.

Hence, he is also highly unlikely to be seen again in the New Zealand’s future plans in the shortest format of the game.
