Tilak Varma Records Slowest IPL Knock Ever [Source: AP, AFP]
Mumbai Indians hit a breaking point in the first innings against KKR in IPL 2026 when Tilak Varma played a sluggish knock when the team needed him the most. Not only that, he broke a 14-year-old unwanted record in the franchise’s history.
KKR asked MI to bat first at the Eden Gardens, and the pitch was nothing like a highway. The fast bowlers and spinners had enough help, and Kolkata used it to their advantage.
Mumbai collapsed early to 23/3 before the rain stopped play for an hour. Even when the play resumed without any overs cut short, MI saw no change in their fate.
Tilak Varma lands in hot water for sluggish knock
Hardik Pandya and Tilak Varma were out in the middle trying to rebuild the innings after the rain break. However, Varma couldn’t middle the ball at all as his struggles were clearly visible.
After a scratchy outing with a strike rate of 62.50, he was dismissed for 20 off 32 balls by Kartik Tyagi. His painful knock included only a single six. This is now the slowest strike rate for an MI batter in an IPL innings with a minimum of 30 balls faced.
Tilak has broken the 14-year-old record previously set by James Franklin way back in 2012. Not only that, all the strike rates in this unwanted list were recorded in the old IPL era of slow innings.
Lowest Strike-Rate for an MI Batter in an IPL Innings (Min 30 balls Faced)
- 62.50 - Tilak Varma vs KKR, Kolkata, 2026
- 76.19 - James Franklin vs PWI, Mumbai (Wankhede), 2012
- 83.3 - James Franklin vs CSK, Chennai, 2012
- 84.37 - Yogesh Takawale vs RR, Navi Mumbai, 2008
- 84.84 - Ricky Ponting vs RCB, Bengaluru, 2013
But Tilak Varma faced his worst fears. The pressure to score got the better of him. Instead of taking responsibility, he let down the franchise big time as MI was reduced to 84/5 at the fall of his wicket.

Tilak Varma’s IPL 2026 season so far
That being said, the IPL 2026 season has been a tournament to forget for the Mumbai Indians as they stand at the ninth position on the points table, eliminated from the playoff race.
Tilak Varma also had a role to play in the team’s downfall. In 12 innings, he scored 356 runs at an average of 32.26, including a hundred and two fifties. While these are decent numbers, they don't justify the talent Varma possesses.
As a senior player, he is responsible for being MI’s leading run-scorer and an anchor in the middle order. However, his form has been highly inconsistent. Moreover, the poor form of Suryakumar Yadav has also added pressure on Tilak’s shoulders.
And due to all these factors combined, the Mumbai Indians are paying the price by being one of the worst teams of the tournament.
Mumbai Indians reach a respectable total
Meanwhile, despite the quick fall of wickets, the Mumbai Indians managed to finish with a respectable total of 147/8 in the first innings. Corbin Bosch and Deepak Chahar teamed up for a 42-run partnership to make the most of the death overs.
Kartik Tyagi conceded 19 off the last over, which shifted the momentum towards MI. Still, KKR are not completely out of the game.

Saurabh Dubey, Cameron Green, and Kartik Tyagi picked two wickets each to keep MI under pressure for most part of the innings. Sunil Narine conceded just 13 runs in his 4 overs while picking up a wicket.
For KKR, the stakes are high, as they must win this game to stay alive in the IPL 2026 playoff race.
