The Kolkata Knight Riders were all over the five-time IPL champions Mumbai Indians on Wednesday night at the Eden Gardens, as they fight for their survival in IPL 2026. In the rain-affected match first innings, MI were reduced to 46/4 after the powerplay, thanks to two wickets each for Cameron Green and Shubham Dubey.

After the rain break, just when it was time to tighten the screws and try to bundle the visitors early on the night, ace spinner Varun Chakravarthy was left fuming by the young Angkrish Raghuvanshi.

The Knight Riders had a golden opportunity to send another dangerous batter back to the hut, but a big mix-up between the two meant it was squandered in rather comical fashion.

The incident happened at the 10.5 over mark when Varun Chakravarthy was bowling to Tilak Varma, who was struggling at 12*(22) at the time. As Varun bowled a delivery on the middle and off stump, moving away with the angle from around the wicket, Tilak Varma tried to take him on across the line, and slog swept him.

The ball went straight up in the bowler’s direction, who was the right person to catch it. However, Angkrish Raghuvanshi ran all the way down the wicket and tried to go for the grab, considering he had gloves. But, just as Varun had caught it rather comfortably, Raghuvanshi came crashing in and collided with the bowler, who already had his injury struggles this season.

Varun was evidently unhappy with the situation and looked animated as he schooled the wicketkeeper for the collision. Fortunately, there were no injuries, and Varun went on to complete his quota of four overs with 0/28.

KKR grab MI by the scruff of its neck

Despite the squandered chance, KKR managed to keep Tilak Varma quiet for the rest of his innings. The southpaw went on to bat till the 13.4 over mark and was dismissed by Kartik Tyagi for 20 off 32.

At the end of 17 overs, the Knight Riders hold a strong grip on the match, with 106 on the board and 7 wickets down. So far, Hardik Pandya, with his 2 off 27 with two fours and a six, is MI’s best performer, followed by 15(13) for Rohit Sharma and 15(6) for Suryakumar Yadav — both of whom were neutralised by Shubham Dubey.

All KKR bowlers have chipped in with timely breakthroughs, but Dubey, with 2/22 and Green, with 2/23, are the pick of the bowlers after 3 overs each.

KKR's quest for IPL 2026 survival

Despite an extremely poor start to the IPL 2026 season, the three-time IPL winners, KKR have managed to pull things back well in the second half of the league phase.

Having played 12 matches ahead of the MI game, they have 11 points on the board. Winning two out of the remaining two could give them an outside chance to finish fourth. A loss against MI will immediately knock them out of the competition.
