Shreyas Iyer Leads India To Most Shameful Record In Indian Cricket History

India's new era under Shreyas Iyer's captaincy has been nothing short of disappointing. It started with the first-ever series in Ireland, and now the T20 World Champions have lost consecutive T20I matches against England.

On Tuesday, the Men in Blue were toppled for 76 mere runs, bagging an infamous record of a 125-run defeat.

Moreover, India have yet to register a victory in the shortest format since lifting the 2026 T20 World Cup back home earlier this year.

Shreyas Iyer becomes 1st Indian captain with a shambolic feat

With the latest defeat at Trent Bridge, Shreyas Iyer has become the first Indian to go winless after five matches as the captain of the Men in Blue.

The Indian T20I captain has taken five matches to register four defeats, while Virat Kohli took nine matches to do so, and MS Dhoni took 12 games to lose his first four matches as skipper.

Known to be a shrewd leader, the Mumbaikar has succeeded Suryakumar Yadav, who had led the most successful T20I team to its second successive ICC title in the format. However, Iyer's captaincy has been questionable, to say the least, in this UK tour.

Although with the bat Shreyas is the second highest scorer in the series, he has been a mere shadow of himself as a leader. One of the prime examples was when the Indian captain threw Ravi Bishnoi under the bus for India's defeat in Manchester.

Woeful India failed against clinical England in Nottingham

England continued the trend of scoring big against the T20 World Champions in this series, as they posted 201/7 at Trent Bridge. Phil Salt led the attack with a blistering 70, while Sam Curran gave them an electrifying finish with his 41*-run cameo.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi and Abhishek Sharma tried to get the momentum with some explosive sixes, but Josh Tongue had Abhishek’s number, and Jofra Archer trapped Sooryavanshi with a deadly short ball.

The two dismissals initiated a haphazard collapse for India, as they lost five wickets inside the powerplay for the first time. The lower middle order and tail could not save India either, as they collapsed for 76 runs.

For England, the new-ball bowlers had the majority of fun, as Tongue bagged four wickets and three went Archer's way, for which he was named the Player of the Match.

Ample things to be sorted by Shreyas Iyer, Gautam Gambhir

From here, India cannot win this series, as they are already trailing by 0-2 after three matches. However, the Shreyas Iyer and Gautam Gambhir-led team management needs to refine its tactics to win the remaining two T20I matches.

Moreover, as Shreyas has been named captain, keeping the next T20I cycle in mind, the upcoming Zimbabwe tour and the Asian Games will be crucial for the T20I skipper.

India will take the field next vs England at Bristol's Seat Unique Stadium on Thursday after a one-day break.
