In a huge setback, India lost the second T20I against England by 4 wickets to trail 0-1 in the 5-game series. After the embarrassing defeat, skipper Shreyas Iyer bluntly criticised Ravi Bishnoi in a post-match outburst.

The match began with India setting up 190 runs on the board in the first innings after quality contributions from Abhishek Sharma, Ishan Kishan, Shreyas Iyer and Tilak Varma.

England also fumbled early in the chase, losing 2 wickets with just 1 run on the board. However, India let the momentum slip with some poor bowling in the middle overs.

Shreyas Iyer takes a direct swipe at Ravi Bishnoi

At 16 overs, England still needed 49 runs. India were firmly in the game until Ravi Bishnoi lost the plot in the 17th over. He conceded 3 sixes and a four as Jacob Bethell collected 29 runs off that single over.

England reduced the required run rate significantly and eventually wrapped up the chase with 6 balls to spare. Naturally, skipper Shreyas Iyer was fuming. In the post-match presentation ceremony, he blamed Bishnoi solely for the defeat.

“We all know where it went away. But I do not want to pin point any particular player. We were cruising for the first 15 overs. But then, it slipped away,” Shreyas Iyer said.

Though he refused to name him directly, Iyer’s words were enough to convey his intentions. He added that Bishnoi has to learn from his mistakes.

“(On Ravi Bishnoi's no-balls) I think (after the first) one, I was okay, he is going to come back strong. But again in the 17th over, back to back... He has to learn,” he added.

Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy era hits a new low

Meanwhile, Shreyas Iyer’s anger also stemmed from the fact that this was his third straight loss as India’s T20I captain. Under his leadership, the team previously lost the 2-game series against Ireland.

Moreover, to add to the misery, the 191-run chase in Manchester is the highest successful run chase in the history of the England vs India T20I rivalry. This is the second time India hit a low in the T20I format history after getting whitewashed against Ireland.

Highest Successful Run-Chase for England vs India in T20Is:

  • 191/6 – Manchester, 2026 (T-191), 2026
  • 181/4 – Mumbai (Wankhede), 2012 (T-178)
  • 170/0 – Adelaide, 2022 (T-169)

Both of these unwanted records were set under Shreyas Iyer’s captaincy, and questions are already being raised on his competence as a leader.

Jacob Bethell becomes India’s nightmare

Having said that, for England, Jacob Bethell was the star of the night as he scored 76* off 46 balls, including 5 fours and as many sixes. Harry Brook earlier set the platform with 39 off 15 balls.

For India, Ravi Bishnoi had a horrific night as he conceded 60 runs off his 4 overs alone without picking up a single wicket. Arshdeep Singh picked 3 wickets but leaked 40 runs.

Axar Patel was the most economical bowler, as he conceded just 20 runs while picking up a single wicket of Brook. With a 1-0 lead in hand, England will host India in the 3rd T20I on July 7 at the Trent Bridge stadium in Nottingham.
