Iyer's warning to Gambhir after becoming captain [Source: AFP]
It is now official, Shreyas Iyer has been appointed as the new Indian T20I captain. The Mumbaikar replaced fellow Mumbai teammate, Suryakumar Yadav, who led India to glory in the T20 World Cup 2026. Surya had a slump in form during and after the World Cup, and as a result, he was removed from the post.
Shreyas always had the leadership skills, and it was evident with how he led the Delhi Capitals, KKR, and the Punjab Kings in the IPL. His appointment has not been a surprise since Iyer was touted to be a future Indian leader.
However, there is a thing about Iyer, he won’t change his personality and captaincy tactics to suit others, and he gave this hint in a recent interview during the Mumbai T20 League.
What is Shreyas Iyer's style of captaincy?
There are certain captains who tend to make decisions as advised by others. They tend to go by a set plan laid out for them, and if their plan A fails, there is no backup. Iyer, is the complete opposite of this, as the Mumbai batter has a completely different personality.
He is a player’s captain, meaning that if he shows trust in a particular player, Iyer tends to back them all throughout the tournament. Prabhsimran Singh, the Punjab Kings batter, is a prime example of it, as the opener himself admitted how Iyer helped him become a better player.
The Indian batter has his set of ideas, and he tends to follow the same, rather than going forward with the advice given to him by someone else.
Shreyas Iyer warns Gautam Gambhir ahead of maiden T20I series as captain
Gautam Gambhir, the Indian head coach, has a vision different from other coaches. He has a set of philosophies, and the coach wants his players to follow the same.
In a recent interview during the Mumbai T20 League, Shreyas Iyer indirectly warned Gambhir, and stated that he won’t change his personality for someone else.

"Being India captain is a great challenge, but I don't need to change my personality." I have to be the same person I was before," Iyer said as quoted by PTI.
The coach and the captain have to be on the same page, but that doesn’t mean the skipper has to change his tactics and personality to suit others.
Iyer-Gambhir pair aiming to replicate KKR heroics with India
Interestingly, this is not the first time Gambhir and Iyer have worked together in a team. They played together for the Delhi side in the IPL, and Iyer actually replaced Gambhir as the captain of the side.
Their paths crossed once again during the 2024 IPL season when Gambhir became the team mentor, and Iyer was the captain of the side. Together, the pair created one of the fearsome IPL sides ever, as KKR won the IPL 2024 with utmost ease as they bulldozed their opponents.
Starting from the Ireland and England T20Is, the pair will join forces once again, and they’ll be hopeful of creating the same environment that was present in the KKR dugout, and it could eventually help India attain more World titles.
