The iconic Lord’s in London scripted history on Thursday, June 4. The moment when home captain Ben Stokes flipped the coin and New Zealand skipper Tom Latham called it heads, the venue officially hosted its 150th Test, a feat matched by no other cricket ground in the world.

As the Lord’s stadium enters history books to uphold its significant status, here is a look at five cricket grounds that have hosted the highest number of Test matches since the format’s inception nearly 150 years ago.

5. Old Trafford, Manchester – 86 Tests

The Old Trafford in Manchester is England’s second oldest Test venue. Having opened its gates back in 1857 as the home ground of the Manchester Cricket Club, the stadium hosted its first Test match in the year 1884.

The occasion was the series-opening first Test of the 1884 Ashes series, where both Australia and hosts England fought off a low-scoring draw in Old Trafford.

The venue has already hosted some iconic moments in Test cricket history, with Jim Laker’s record 19-wicket haul in 1956 and Shane Warne’s momentous ‘Ball of the Century’ in 1993 all happening at the stadium. To date, Old Trafford has hosted 86 Test matches in its 142-year-old Test history.

4. Kennington Oval, London – 108 Tests

The Oval, or the Kennington Oval in London is officially England’s oldest Test venue. The stadium is one of only four venues in the world, and only one of two English venues to have hosted over 100 Test matches.

Having hosted 108 Tests to date, the stadium first graced the format back in 1880. Home of the Surrey Cricket Club, the venue also hosted the prestigious final of the 2023 ICC World Test Championship in June 2023.

3. Sydney Cricket Ground, Sydney – 114 Tests

The picturesque Sydney Cricket Ground in Sydney is one of the most iconic stadiums in the world. When the stadium is not hosting some high-octane BBL thrillers, action-packed ODI games and exhilarating Rugby League matches, it is hosting some sporting Test match cricket that often stretch across all five days.

It is the ground where Shane Warne, Glenn McGrath and Justin Langer played their final Tests after Australia clinched the 2006-07 Ashes 5-0. One of the most spin-friendly grounds in Australia, the SCG has hosted 114 Test matches to date since its format debut back in 1882.

2. Melbourne Cricket Ground, Melbourne – 118 Tests

The Melbourne Cricket Ground in Melbourne is where it all began, not just for Australia but for Test cricket in general. The venue hosted the first-ever Test match to be played, doing so way back in 1877 with a match between Australia and England, thus making it the oldest international cricket ground in the world.

Notably, the MCG also hosted the first-ever ODI match, and has staged multiple white-ball World Cup finals. To date, the MCG or the ‘G’ has hosted 118 Test matches, making it the most capped Australian Test ground.

1. Lord’s, London – 150* Tests

The Lord’s, also known as the ‘Home of Cricket’, is the home of the Middlesex County Cricket Club. Housing the world’s oldest sporting museum, the Lord’s in London can also house over 30,000 spectators at once.

It is the first-ever stadium to host 100 Tests, and has now become the first-ever venue in the world to reach 150 Test matches. The venue attained the landmark figure with the series-opening first Test between New Zealand and hosts England in June 2026.
