IPL 2027 schedule (Source: AFP)
The apex governing body of the Indian Premier League, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI), is actively considering advancing the IPL 2027 schedule to an earlier window. As of now, it seems that the plan is to begin future editions around March 10 and conclude by May 15.
In conversation with the PTI, the BCCI secretary Devajit Saikia revealed, "From next year, I have already instructed our general manager games development to look for the windows whether we can start it by 10th of March so that we want to conclude it by 15th of May."
For someone living under a rock, the IPL is the biggest cricketing event in India, serving as a multi-billion-dollar economic engine, a career-defining platform for young cricketers, and the country's premier entertainment spectacle.
Even the slightest hint around the league becomes the talk of the town. Thus, the IPL 2027 schedule has already become the next big topic of conversation across the nation.
That being said, this article explores the reasons why the BCCI has decided to move the IPL window, and even the last time it took place so early.
Why BCCI Wants To Move The IPL Window?
The BCCI’s decision to shift the IPL window is aimed at mitigating the impact of extreme weather on players, fans, and match operations.
Saikia further stated, “During the fag end of the tournament after May 15, there is apprehension of rainfall or the pre-monsoon season starting. On the other hand, there is hot weather which is not conducive either for the players or the crowds.”
The BCCI official also emphasised that despite periodic discussions around increasing the size of the tournament, there are currently no plans to expand the IPL beyond its existing 74-match format.

"...that is not feasible right at this moment because we have to consider many other factors regarding various players coming from various nations. With lot of difficulties we are getting this two months window,” he said.
“It will be very difficult to go beyond two months because other countries also have to play bilateral matches…So at this moment there is no discussion regarding increasing matches from 74 to 94. Not happening immediately,” Saikia stated clearly.
Now the question shifts: when was the last time the IPL was held in the anticipated window?
Has IPL ever started this early before?
For the unversed, the earliest an Indian Premier League schedule has ever started is March 12, which occurred in the 2010 season. If Devajit Saikia’s statement were to be taken word for word, the IPL 2027 schedule could become the earliest the league has ever started.

Why does the IPL schedule begin in Late March?
The IPL schedule has evolved from an 8-team, 59-match tournament over 44 days in 2008 into a 10-team, 74-match marathon lasting over two months. The major reason why IPL schedule begins in late March are:
- 2008–2010: 8-Team Era – The IPL began with eight teams playing a double round-robin format, followed by semi-finals and a final. Seasons lasted around 45 days and featured 59 matches.
- 2011–2013: First Expansion Phase – The addition of franchises such as Kochi Tuskers Kerala and Pune Warriors India increased the number of teams to 9–10. Teams were divided into two groups, with seasons expanding to 74–76 matches over 50–75 days.
- 2014–2021: Merger and Suspension Years – The tournament largely returned to the traditional eight-team format. Gujarat Lions and Rising Pune Supergiant temporarily replaced suspended franchises Chennai Super Kings and Rajasthan Royals in 2016 and 2017. The 2020 season was shifted to the UAE due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
- 2022–Present: 10-Team Era – The introduction of Gujarat Titans and Lucknow Super Giants expanded the league to 10 teams. A two-group format was adopted, with each team playing 14 league matches in a 74-match season that typically runs for 60–70 days. The BCCI has also increasingly used phased scheduling to accommodate logistical and election-related requirements.
