Shreyas Iyer's effort stuns Rohit, Suryakumar [Source: Screengrab/IPL]
The IPL has seen some of the best catches in the history of cricket, and on Thursday evening, the world saw yet another gravity-defying effort in the Mumbai Indians vs Punjab Kings IPL 2026 match at the Wankhede Stadium. Shreyas Iyer, who is not known for acrobatic efforts, showed the world his real class on the field.
The MI vs PBKS IPL match was heading in an interesting direction as Hardik Pandya had started to loosen up, and he was aiming for a clinical finish in the death overs as MI faced the Punjab side in a crucial must-win contest.
However, Hardik failed to deliver the goods, as his plans were defused by Punjab captain, Shreyas Iyer, who showed real athleticism, and shocked the entire IPL fraternity with perhaps the “greatest-ever” IPL fielding effort.
Shreyas Iyer defies gravity to stun Mumbai Indians
Marco Jasen bowled a slower and fuller delivery outside the off as Hardik swung and missed the desired connection on the shot. It was still good enough to clear the boundary ropes, but Shreyas, at long-on had some other plans.
For a brief second, it felt as if the ball would clear the ropes, but Iyer backtracked and leaped in the air to grab the ball. The fielder was clearly going over the ropes, and this is where Iyer showed his presence of mind as he released the ball while in the air, and Xavier Bartlett took a sharp relay catch.

The Shreyas Iyer catch shook the IPL, and also the Mumbai Indians players- Rohit Sharma, and Suryakumar Yadav, as the duo were in awe of Iyer’s efforts.
How tough was Shreyas Iyer's execution to dismiss Hardik Pandya
Iyer’s efforts were special because the fielder hardly had any time to react. It is never easy to grab the ball under lights, but the Punjab Kings captain was up for the task as he kept his eyes on the ball, and backtracked at the same time.
Moreover, Iyer only had a split second to make his judgment as he was already in the air, and was going over the ropes when he took the catch, but in a fraction of a second, he spilled the ball in the air, and the fielder was there at the right position to send Hardik back to the pavilion.

Mumbai Indians restricted to below par total by Iyer's Punjab
The Wankhede Stadium is known as a high-scoring IPL venue, but on Thursday, PBKS bowlers, especially Arshdeep Singh, defied the odds as they made the ball talk in the powerplay.
Arshdeep grabbed two early wickets to reach the century wicket milestone (100 IPL wickets), but after that, it was the Quinton de Kock show as the batter, playing his first game of the season took the PBKS attack to the cleaners.
The left-handed keeper slammed his third hundred in the IPL, but despite his efforts, the Mumbai Indians side failed to cross the 200-run mark, and were restricted to 195/6. The other batters simply failed as the team crumbled under pressure.
