The Chennai Super Kings legends reunited on Sunday evening at the iconic Chepauk Stadium in the pre-season ROAR event to take fans down memory lane to the franchise’s history. The stalwarts from yesteryears, including the former orange cap winner, Michael Hussey, faced the roster of 2026 before the ball got rolling for IPL 2026.
To the fans’ delight, the ex-CSK opener, Hussey, was seen facing captain Ruturaj Gaikwad’s off-spin during the event with the ever-present CSK legend MS Dhoni wicketkeeping. As the trio took the pitch, MS Dhoni was left in awe, seeing the effortlessness shown by Hussey while facing Gaikwad’s bowling.

As the 50-year-old former CSK opener, famously known as Mr Cricket, took on the off-break bowling of Ruturaj Gaikwad, he was presented with a half-volley by the bowler. As Hussey would do throughout his career, he took a step out of the crease and easily dispatched the ball to the crowd with an inside-out over extra cover.
He replicated a similar shot on the next ball and got another six in the same region, and former captain MS Dhoni was left speechless with the levels shown by Hussey on the afternoon.

Notably, this was the first time that Gaikwad rolled his arm to bowl at the Chepauk stadium, surprising the fans. Previously, he has only bowled in domestic cricket, with no wickets to his name across 3 innings.

Hussey rewinds time at Chepauk
The CSK legend, Mike Hussey, was among the crucial contributors to the early dominance that the Men in Yellow exhibited in the IPL. Having only played at the Chepauk for only the period from 2008 to 2013 as a CSK player, he scored 1008 runs at an average of 45.81 in 25 innings, which is still the third-highest for any CSK player at the venue.
In his time at the CSK, they won two IPL titles (2010 and 2011), while making it to numerous finals. He also won the orange cap in 2013 with the then record of 733 runs in a season.
Overall, he has played 64 innings for for the Super Kings with 2213 runs, averaging 41 with 17 fifties and a hundred. He was later also a part of their support staff as the batting coach.
CSK’s special tribute to the legends
Prior to IPL 2026, apart from Michael Hussey and MS Dhoni being present together at the Chepauk again, the Super Kings invited all their prominent stars to celebrate their memorable time with the franchise. Former players were seen playing alongside the 2026 roster with the event open for the Chennai crowd.
Alongside Mike Hussey and Thala MS Dhoni, the other star attendees at the event included their leading run-scorer, Suresh Raina, their first orange cap winner, Matthew Hayden, multiple purple caps winner, Dwayne Bravo, and Muttiah Muralitharan, among others.
The ROAR 2026 event also builds up the excitement towards IPL 2026, where a lot of youngsters will don the CSK jersey for the first time and look to bounce back from a disappointing last season.
Captain Ruturaj Gaikwad will lead the power-packed side in yet another season, which is also rumoured to be MS Dhoni's last IPL after they included Sanju Samson in the squad. They begin their season on March 30 against the Rajasthan Royals before they play the first match at the Chepauk against the Punjab Kings on April 3.
