No one has been happier than Suryakumar Yadav, the India captain who won his first-ever ICC title as a leader after captaining for a relatively short period of time. SKY's personal milestones as a batter have not been too great to be proud of in this edition of the mega ICC event. However, his leadership skills on the field have been widely acknowledged by cricket experts and fans alike.
While there has not been much rumour lately regarding his retirement buzz or what is next for the talented Mr. 360, Suryakumar Yadav has hinted at a possible retirement date in the post-match press conference after India's win against New Zealand in the final.
Suryakumar Yadav’s Underwhelming T20 World Cup 2026 Campaign
Though Suryakumar has managed to maintain an average of 30.25 throughout the tournament from his nine innings, his slow strike rate of 136.72 along with disappointing scores like 11, 12, 18, and a golden duck in the final, have added to his struggling and inconsistent form.
With not much contribution with the bat in important encounters, Suryakumar's probable dip has now sparked a messy situation that automatically demands a possible removal of the cricketer.
However, even though it is not a massive hint at hanging up his boots, Suryakumar Yadav has indicated what his next goals are.

SKY Reveals Goal Before Retiring
The 35-year-old has been in India's side since 2021 in both T20Is and ODIs, and Suryakumar hinted that after the T20 World Cup 2026 win, his next goal is the Olympics gold and the 2028 World Cup win.
“Next goal is Olympics gold and the T20 World Cup which is also in that year,” Suryakumar said.
Expanding more on how the new brand of cricket is helping the Indian team, an excited Surya cited the difference between the ICC Champions Trophy 2025 and this World Cup.
“We have won three ICC trophies in a row. Everything is going well. We understood how this team needs to work forward. 2025 Champions Trophy, we played a different brand. Now in 2026 we played differently. It's about winning tournaments,” SKY revealed.
Will 2028 Olympics Be The Last Dance For SKY?
By 2028, Suryakumar Yadav will be turning 37 years old, when cricket will return to the 2028 Summer Olympics in Los Angeles for the first time in 128 years.
While India has never played cricket in the Olympics before, both the men's and women's teams are expected to be strong contenders for winning the gold medal after their success at the 2023 Asian Games.
Notably, the tournament will have the T20 format with six teams competing in both men's and women's categories.
India Spot Sealed After T20 World Cup 2026 Win
Nevertheless, with India's T20 World Cup 2026 win, a direct spot through a quota-based system or based on International Cricket Council rankings might allow the team to qualify directly.
Speaking of the win, the team posted a mammoth total of 255 runs on the board to rattle New Zealand's chase from the very beginning, courtesy of Varun Chakaravarthy and Axar Patel, who dismantled both the openers.
Jasprit Bumrah's four-fer and Axar Patel's three-fer then further damaged the middle order and tail-enders to clean up New Zealand inside 19 overs and hand India a 96-run win.-
