The humiliating group-stage exit from the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026 has severely affected Australia’s hopes of playing in the cricket competition at the Olympics in Los Angeles 2028. Notably, it has happened for the first time with Australia since the T20 World Cup 2009, when they were knocked out in the first round.

Speaking of Australia’s miserable run of form in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026, they started their campaign with a 67-run win against Ireland. But this win was followed by a stunning 23-run defeat against Zimbabwe before Sri Lanka outplayed the Aussies by eight wickets in their third group-stage game.

The humiliating T20 World Cup exit dents Australia's hopes for Olympics

In case of qualification for the highly anticipated cricket competition at the LA Olympics 2028, the early World Cup exit has put the Aussie hopes in jeopardy. As per the ICC-approved criterion, the top-ranked team from each continent will qualify for the cricket competition at the LA Olympics 2028.

Meanwhile, this criterion is yet to be approved by the International Olympic Committee (IOC). However, multiple media reports understand that the IOC is likely to give a nod to ICC’s criteria.

According to the aforementioned criteria, one of the staunch advocates of cricket’s return to the global sporting competition, Aussies, are on the verge of missing the Men’s cricket competition.

From the Oceania continent, one of the two teams, Australia and New Zealand, will qualify for the Olympics, based on their ranking at the end of the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.

After the early exit of Mitchell Marsh and Co. and New Zealand’s Super-8 qualification, it could be a tough pill to swallow for the 2021 World T20 champions, as the Blackcaps journey to semis or beyond will push the former down in ranking.

One of the torchbearers likely to be forced to play Olympic Qualifiers

Interestingly, Cricket Australia was one of the torchbearers in advocating cricket’s inclusion in the Olympics, a century after the game’s sole appearance in the Paris Olympics in 1900.

19 years ago, in 2007, Cricket Australia came up with a report that examined the value of cricket in the global sporting competition in the T20 format. At that time, the CA report was commissioned, with the aim of including cricket in the 2020 Olympics in Tokyo.

But initially, it was opposed by two of the cricket’s big three, England and India. However, the English and Indian opposition was turned in the favour, and the cricket was approved for LA in 2028.

“Those of us who spent 20 years against the odds getting cricket back into the Olympic program for the first time in over a century would regard it as mismanagement of epic proportions for Australia to fail to qualify for the world’s largest sports event in global sport’s biggest market,” the author of 2007 CA report, Phillip Pope was quoted as saying by The Age.

Steve Smith's desire quashed

Prior to Pope’s disappointment, the former Aussie captain and modern-day batting great, Steve Smith, also expressed his desire to be part of the cricket competition at the 2028 Olympics.

“My main goal is to get in the team when the Olympics are rolling around. I’d be keen to do that. That’d be pretty cool. So, keep doing what I’m doing and you never know,” The Age quoted Steve Smith as saying.

So, playing Olympic qualifiers with the second-ranked teams of other continents will be no less than an embarrassment for a cricket team of Australia’s stature that won multiple ICC tournaments in a dominant manner.
