After the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, Team India looked in trouble against England in the first ODI, but captain Shubman Gill came to the rescue. However, just when it looked like the Indian skipper would steer the team past the winning line, he started to suffer from cramps.

Throughout the Indian innings, Gill looked uncomfortable as he repeatedly complained of cramps. In the 26th over of the innings, things turned from bad to worse as Gill had to walk back off the field in pain.

The Indian ODI captain fought hard and was getting close to his 10th ODI hundred, but his body gave up as the batter suffered from multiple cramps. He looked in some discomfort as the team physio rushed onto the field.

The right-handed batter suffered the injury on his right leg, as he looked in immense pain, and he eventually decided to walk off the field as Gill was declared retired hurt in the IND Vs ENG 1st ODI.

Gill can still come out to bat later in the innings, but judging by his gestures, the comeback looks highly unlikely.

Not the first time Shubman Gill has been retired hurt in ODIs

Interestingly, this has not been the first time that Gill retired hurt in an ODI game. The previous instance occurred during the India vs New Zealand 2023 World Cup semi-final.

Gill was batting at 79 when he sustained cramps and was declared retired hurt before he made his return in the same innings.

The Indian opener looked in ominous touch against the Kiwis, but at the crucial juncture, he had to leave the field at the Wankhede Stadium, Mumbai. He joined Dilip Vengsarkar, Sourav Ganguly, and Kris Srikkanth as the Indian players to have retired hurt multiple times in ODIs.
