Mitchell Owen has been the most consistent player in Major League Cricket (MLC). Playing for Washington Freedom, he has established himself as a premium all-rounder, someone who does almost every role.
A pace-bowling all-rounder is always a luxury in this format, and when the player excels equally in both disciplines, the team automatically becomes more balanced. That’s precisely what Owen does for Washington Freedom.
Mitchell Owen’s remarkable MLC consistency
This season, Mitchell Owen is currently the third-leading run-scorer, with 375 runs at an average of 37.50 and a strike rate of 200.53 in 10 innings. Additionally, he has two fifties and a century.

That century was a massive 155 he scored against MI New York in Dallas. Owen has also hit the joint-most maximums (27) in the competition.
He hits a boundary every 3.11 deliveries. The Freedom have been smart enough to give him his ideal batting spot - opening - to extract the best out of him.
This is a role in which Mitchell Owen initially found ample success in the Big Bash League (BBL), including a magnificent century in the final of the 2024-25 season. Since then, he has earned IPL, PSL, and SA20 gigs and has even debuted for Australia in both white-ball formats.
Additionally, the Aussie all-rounder has eight scalps at 29.75 runs apiece in nine outings, including a best of 3/19, in MLC 2026. Only two other Washington Freedom bowlers - Saurabh Netravalkar and Ian Holland - have snared more wickets than Owen this season.
How Owen has established himself as a ferocious striker
Since 2025, Mitchell Owen has 1482 runs at an average of 24.29 and a strike rate of 193.22 in 62 T20 innings, including five fifties and two centuries. He hits a boundary every 3.33 deliveries.
Among batters with at least 50 T20 innings since last year, his strike rate is the third-best, behind only Abhishek Sharma (201.35) and Finn Allen (195.51). What makes Owen’s numbers more impressive is that he has batted in every batting spot in the top seven except No.4.
In different tournaments, he has been asked to play different roles, but his returns have been encouraging across the board. A major reason for his success across batting positions has been his superior pace game, which one’d expect from an Australian player.
Mitchell Owen has been explosive in T20s
Since 2025, Mitchell Owen has had a strike rate of 195.91 and a balls-per-boundary ratio of 3.18 against pace. He has a stable base and brute power to whack hard lengths, making him very hard to stop.
That’s also why teams haven’t minded using him as a finisher in the lower order, despite most of his success coming as a top-order batter. With such a strong pace game, Owen becomes a valuable player, giving the franchise the luxury of asking him to do the tougher role.
Why Mitchell Owen could be useful for Punjab Kings
Mitchell Owen came in as a replacement player for Glenn Maxwell in 2025 and was retained for the 2026 edition. However, Punjab Kings didn’t give him any games this season and kept using other all-rounders such as Marcus Stoinis, Marco Jansen, and Azmatullah Omarzai.
PBKS should still retain Owen for IPL 2027 and use him wisely to get ample value. Stoinis has been hot and cold, while Omarzai has also not been at his best in the competition.
Hence, Mitchell Owen could act as a pace-bowling all-rounder to partner Jansen, since he can bat anywhere from the top to the middle. Ideally, PBKS should use him at No.3, where Cooper Connolly batted for most of the matches in 2026.
Connolly can get stuck at times since he’s a slow starter. However, they can continue with him at No.3 and slot Owen somewhere at No.6 or below.
Mitchell Owen has been unstoppable against pace
Stoinis has shown signs of regression with the bat lately, despite a few quality knocks here and there. His bowling, in particular, has hardly been convincing, and PBKS have shown no trust.
Since 2025, Marcus Stoinis has bowled only 22 overs, taking just three wickets at an average of 91 and an economy rate of 12.40. These numbers suggest that he has played as a specialist batter with some bowling value.
Meanwhile, Owen has a knack for picking wickets and can contribute more with the ball. Hence, that opens the room for his return as a pace-bowling all-rounder.
He has made rapid progress as a T20 player and will be a massive asset for the Kings in subsequent seasons. The idea should be to give him more exposure next season, for Owen brings what few T20 players can at the moment.
