Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli continue to remain under scrutiny as discussions around their long-term ODI future and 2027 World Cup gather momentum. While both senior batters have consistently been among India’s biggest match-winners, every innings is now being closely analysed.

However, their latest outing against England in the 1st ODI on Tuesday, July 14 failed to live up to expectations, as both stars were dismissed for low scores. Notably, India chasing a target of 259 were expected to make a confident start.

Although the opening partnership looked steady in the early overs, England struck at the right time. Rohit Sharma was removed for 11 runs from 21 deliveries as Sam Curran provided the breakthrough.

Soon after, Virat Kohli walked in at no 3 with hopes of stabilising the innings. However, the former Indian captain could not make an impact either, managing just 5 runs off 6 balls before returning to the pavilion.

Fans slam Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli following their early exits

Following the dismissals of Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli, social media platforms were flooded with mixed reactions. While several fans expressed disappointment over the poor performances, others questioned whether the veteran duo can continue to lead India’s batting line-up in the coming years.

Moreover, many supporters pointed out that expectations from both players remain extremely high because of their remarkable records.

At the same time, some fans defended the experienced pair, insisting that one poor innings should not define their abilities.

Pressure Continues To Grow On Virat Kohli and Rohit Sharma

As the countdown to the 2027 ODI World Cup continues, Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli are expected to deliver consistently.  Although Kohli entered the series after recovering from a hamstring injury, he had enjoyed an impressive run before that setback.

The star batter had scored 240 runs in his previous three ODI innings at an outstanding average of 80, including one century and one half-century.

On the other hand, Rohit Sharma also has plenty to prove despite playing a valuable knock of 79 runs in his previous ODI appearance against Afghanistan.

However, with young players like Yashasvi Jaiswal and Ishan Kishan performing consistently whenever opportunities arise, competition for places in India’s batting order is becoming increasingly fierce.

England post 258 after late recovery

Earlier in the match, England posted 258 before being bowled out in 47.5 overs. Ben Duckett scored 43 off 45 balls, while Jacob Bethell added 14 from 31 balls as the pair stitched together a 61-run opening partnership.

However, Gurnoor Brar turned the game in India’s favour by dismissing both openers in the same over. Soon after, Jasprit Bumrah removed Harry Brook for 1 run, while Prasidh Krishna struck twice in an over to send back Jos Buttler and Sam Curran cheaply.

Although Will Jacks attempted to accelerate with 20 off 19 balls, Shivam Dube ended his stay at the crease. Later, Liam Dawson and Joe Root rebuilt England’s innings with 121-run partnership for the 7th wicket. Notably, their resilient stand guided England to a competitive total of 258, giving their bowlers a challenging score to defend.
