Jonathan Trott, the former England batter who is famously known for his clash with Virat Kohli during a heated 2011 Test series, has taken up a new challenge.

The on-field confrontation at Trent Bridge, where a young Virat Kohli squared up to Trott after a verbal exchange, became one of that summer’s defining images and cemented Trott as an antagonist for Indian fans for years.

Nevertheless, now, 15 years on, the veteran has been handed a short-term coaching role with Ireland after Heinrich Malan stepped down in June 2026 after a tenure of 4 years handing India, a historic series defeat.

Jonathan Trott roped in as consultant for Ireland cricket team

Ireland has appointed Jonathan Trott to a short-term consultancy role with the senior men’s squad. It is not a permanent head coach position, but Trott will effectively lead the team’s preparation and matchday strategy for a crucial home series against Afghanistan.

His contract runs for just 14 days, starting next week. The series will also be treated as vital groundwork for the ICC Men’s Cricket World Cup Qualifier in early 2027.

Trott’s inside knowledge of the Afghanistan set-up makes him a unique asset. He stepped down as Afghanistan’s head coach in February 2026 after a transformative four-year spell.

Having worked directly with the players Ireland will now face, he can offer tactical blueprints and insights into individual weaknesses that no other coach could provide at such short notice.

Graeme West, Cricket Ireland’s Director of High Performance, explained the thinking behind the move.

“This is a rare opportunity to bring a world-class coach into the senior team environment offering a wealth of current knowledge on the opposition. Having worked with the Afghanistan squad, Jonathan is perfectly placed to support our strategic planning for the series, providing our players and staff with a new perspective,” West said.

Jonathan Trott’s CV as a Coach

Though Trott played 52 Tests, 68 ODIs, and seven T20Is for England between 2007 and 2015, his coaching career has arguably been even more remarkable.

His headline achievement remains a four-year stint as head coach of Afghanistan from 2022 to 2026. Under his watch, Afghanistan shed their underdog tag and became a genuine tournament contenders.

He led them to the 2023 ODI World Cup, where they stunned defending champions England, and then masterminded a historic run to the semi-finals of the 2024 T20 World Cup.

He stepped away from the role after the 2026 T20 World Cup, leaving behind a team that had learned how to win on the biggest stages.

His coaching path began with youth cricket. Trott worked with England Under-19s at the ICC U19 World Cup in 2017 and later served as a batting coach for England Lions. A brief consultancy with the senior England team during the 2021 India tour gave him a taste of top-level coaching.

Domestically, he has held roles as assistant coach at Warwickshire, batting coach at Kent, and has worked with Scotland’s national team. In franchise cricket, Trott has headed the Gulf Giants in the ILT20 and the Pretoria Capitals in the SA20, learning to manage multi-national squads and the pressures of knockout tournaments.

Trott looking forward to continue success after India win

Trott arrives in Ireland at a time of genuine momentum. The men’s team recently pulled off a stunning 2-0 T20I series sweep against India at Stormont in Belfast. It was a result that ended India’s 16-series unbeaten streak and announced Ireland as a side capable of taking down the world’s best.

The series was won through smart, disciplined cricket. Ireland’s pace attack, led by Matthew Hollard and debutant Jai Moondra, exploited seaming, two-paced pitches to tear through India’s top order repeatedly. That grit and tactical clarity will be the foundation Jonathan Trott looks to build upon.
