Rohit Sharma has been a busy man in recent times and has been in the spotlight as the ambassador for the ongoing Men’s T20 World Cup 2026. The Indian skipper, who won the last edition for India in the tournament held in India and Sri Lanka, has once again grabbed attention.
He began his ambassador role at the Wankhede Stadium, walking out with the trophy during the India vs USA game last Saturday. Since then, Rohit has been part of several events, meeting fans and sharing his thoughts about the game he loves.
On Wednesday, at a DP World event, Rohit lit up the stage with his presence. While he spoke about many things, one answer stood out. His thoughts on playing the 2027 ODI World Cup which seemed like a subtle but strong reply to chief selector Ajit Agarkar’s earlier “non-committal” remark.
Rohit Sharma breaks silence on Ajit Agarkar’s ‘non-committal’ tag
Last year, when Rohit Sharma and Virat Kohli’s ODI future was under serious doubt ahead of the Australia tour, Ajit Agarkar had said that both seniors were “non-committal” about playing the 2027 World Cup. The comment created debate around their long-term plans.
For months, neither of them addressed the comment publicly. But at the recent event, on being asked about his commitment to play the game going forward, Rohit finally got his chance. Without naming anyone directly, he answered his doubters in style.
“I think you gotta commit to the cause of what lies in front of you and it is not about one or two individuals driving that direction. It is important that the whole team goes in that direction and that hunger to go and win the trophy,” Rohit said.
After that remark, both Rohit and Virat stayed silent but let their bats do the talking. They delivered strong performances in Australia and the following two home series, showing focus and hunger in the ODI format and giving clear signs that the 2027 World Cup has been still very much on their minds.
Why Rohit Sharma badly wants that 50-over World Cup
Rohit Sharma further made it clear that winning the 50-over World Cup for India remains one of his biggest dreams. He said he grew up watching the ODI World Cup when there was no T20 World Cup or IPL, and that tournament was the highest stage in cricket.
“I definitely want to go out there and win the World Cup for my country. I have grown up watching this 50-over World Cup. There was no T20 World Cup, no IPL back then. I really want that trophy so I'm gonna try and do everything in my power and capacity to work hard and get it,” Rohit added.
For him, that trophy carries emotion and history. He spoke about the desperation and weight attached to it and said he will do everything in his power, work hard, stay fit, and give his best, to try and lift that World Cup for his country.
Doubt Rohit at your own risk
Rohit Sharma is a veteran of the game and has seen every phase of international cricket. He understands when to stay quiet and when to speak. This time, he chose the perfect moment to respond, not with anger, but with calm confidence.
His message was simple yet powerful. Commitment was never the issue. Or will never be. Sometimes, silence is the strongest answer. And this time, Rohit cheekily reminded everyone, including the Indian chief selector Ajit Agarkar that doubting his hunger and ambition could prove to be a big mistake.
