After West Indies made early inroads into England’s batting line-up during their chase of 197 runs, the Shai Hope-led side registered a phenomenal 30-run win on February 11 at the Wankhede Stadium in the ongoing T20 World Cup 2026.

However, it seemed that the result did not fully impress India cricketer and KKR captain Ajinkya Rahane. Speaking after the match in a Cricbuzz interview, Rahane was candid as he shared his thoughts on how West Indies plan their game.

Rahane doubted whether they are truly effective with their strategy, suggesting that they are charmers on the field who keep the crowd and spectators happy with their celebrations.

What Did Ajinkya Rahane Say About West Indies Team?

Ajinkya Rahane's statement came in the context of West Indies’ strong run in the T20 World Cup 2026, where they have won two out of two Group C matches against England and Scotland.

While West Indies are one of the pre-seeded teams in the competition, England were initially expected to top the table. However, after the recent game, England slipped to the number three position with one win from two matches.

Nevertheless, the flawless victory prompted Ajinkya Rahane to make a candid remark about West Indies’ larger-than-life celebrations. He said he was not too sure whether they do too much planning or just go with the flow, as they do not appear to think excessively about winning.

“I dont think West Indians dont think too much about the game. They are not too much into planning, I am not too sure. But again, I love their celebration. When they are doing really good on the field its a very good sight the way they celebrate,” Rahane said while speaking to Cricbuzz.

Netizens Bash Rahane For Satirical Comment

The comment quickly went viral on social media, with netizens criticising him for what many felt was an insensitive remark. Ajinkya Rahane, who is otherwise known as a humble and grounded personality, saw his comment being perceived by Caribbean fans and netizens alike as somewhat derogatory towards the West Indies team and their supporters.

Netizens soon took to social media to react to Rahane’s statement. While some criticised his remark, many others defended him, claiming that his comments were taken out of context. Amid a flurry of mixed reactions, the internet remained divided over Rahane’s views on the West Indies side.

Let’s take a look at how the internet reacted to Ajinkya Rahane’s comment:

West Indies Humble England At Ahmedabad

West Indies played a commanding knock against England in their second encounter of the T20 World Cup 2026. Though they had a shaky start with two wickets down inside 1.1 overs, Shimron Hetmyer, Roston Chase, and later Sherfane Rutherford took charge to guide the West Indies innings.

Hetmyer struck a 12-ball 23 to push West Indies' total to 55 runs before the end of the powerplay. Roston Chase then anchored the middle overs and contributed a steady 29-ball 34. However, the real MVP was Sherfane Rutherford, who played an unbeaten knock of 76 runs off just 42 deliveries.

He smashed seven sixes and two boundaries while adding 51 runs with Rovman Powell and 61 runs with Jason Holder. This effort powered West Indies to a mammoth 196 on the board.

For England, Jamie Overton and Adil Rashid picked up two wickets each, while Sam Curran and Jofra Archer claimed one wicket apiece.

England Failed To Convert Starts

In reply, England started strongly with Phil Salt’s 14-ball 30. Jos Buttler also showed promise with a 14-ball 21; however, both openers failed to convert their starts. After Buttler’s dismissal in the 6.4 over, the middle order began to crumble, with Tom Banton and Jacob Bethell dismissed by the 9.3-over mark.

Captain Harry Brook, alongside Sam Curran, attempted to build resistance, but it proved futile as wickets kept falling. Curran remained unbeaten on 43 off 30 balls, fighting till the end.

Gudakesh Motie was the wrecker-in-chief for West Indies with his three-wicket haul. Roston Chase also picked up two wickets, while Akeal Hosein, Shamar Joseph, and Romario Shepherd claimed one wicket each. The 30-run victory gave West Indies a significant boost and almost sealed their place in the Super 8 stage of the T20 World Cup 2026.
