In a significant development, BCB has officially announced the launch of the Women’s Bangladesh Premier League (WBPL), marking a historic step for women’s cricket in the country. The inaugural edition of the franchise-based T20 tournament will be held from April 3 to April 15 this year.
For more than a decade, the men’s BPL has been one of the country’s most popular sporting events. Now, the BCB is investing in a women’s version, aiming to create similar excitement, visibility and professional opportunities for female cricketers across Bangladesh.
The launch of the WBPL reflects the board’s growing commitment to developing the women’s game. With structured planning and franchise involvement, the tournament is expected to raise the standard of domestic women’s cricket in Bangladesh and provide a bigger platform for both established names and emerging talents.
Key details about the Women’s BPL
The Women’s BPL will be Bangladesh’s first-ever franchise-based T20 competition exclusively for women. According to a BCB press release, the tournament will bring together leading national players along with emerging cricketers from across the country in a competitive environment.
Local players will be selected through a player draft system. This approach is designed to ensure competitive balance among teams, while also maintaining squad strength and depth. The draft model will help distribute top talent evenly and make the tournament more exciting for the fans.
Franchises will also be allowed to sign overseas professional players, a move which is expected to improve the quality of cricket in the competition. International participation will offer local players valuable exposure and help raise the overall standard of the tournament in its very first edition.
Three Teams to feature in the inaugural edition of Women’s BPL
The opening edition of the WBPL will feature three franchise teams. While this number is small compared to other leagues around the world, it marks an important starting point for women’s franchise cricket in Bangladesh and focus will be especially on building a strong and sustainable foundation.
Each of the three teams will include a mix of national stars and promising domestic players. By combining experience with youth, the BCB hopes to create closely contested matches and give upcoming cricketers a chance to perform alongside established names and get ready to represent Bangladesh Women.
BCB director and Women’s Wing chairperson Rubaba Dowla will head the WBPL Governing Council. The council will oversee all organisational matters related to the tournament. The board has also confirmed that more details about venues, squads and schedules will be announced in the near future.
Franchise cricket opening doors for Women’s game
Franchise leagues have played a huge role in transforming women’s cricket globally. Australia’s Women’s BBLhas been a major success, providing players with financial stability, global recognition and high-quality competition for several years now.
Similarly, India’s WPL has created massive impact in a short time. It has boosted player earnings, increased fan engagement and inspired young girls to take up the sport. With the launch of the WBPL in Bangladesh, the BCB hopes to follow a similar path and open new doors for its women cricketers.
