The Wankhede Stadium witnessed a high-octane Group C clash between England and West Indies in the T20 World Cup 2026. With West Indies batting first, fans expected a run-fest on a surface known for big scores and power-hitting from both sides.
The match carried huge importance in the Group C as both teams aimed to strengthen their position in the points table. West Indies, known for their explosive batting depth, looked ready to dominate on a batting-friendly Mumbai pitch.
However, amid all the expectations of towering sixes and heavy scoring, it was England’s leg-spinner Adil Rashid who stole the spotlight. He achieved a rare milestone, rewriting T20I history and climbing to the top of an all-time record list.
Adil Rashid tops all-time list for most T20I wickets against one team
Adil Rashid entered the match with 40 wickets against West Indies in T20Is, jointly holding the record for most wickets against a single opponent among Full Member nations alongside Pakistan’s Haris Rauf, who has 40 against New Zealand.
Most wickets vs an opponent in T20Is
| Players | Wickets | Opponent |
| Adil Rashid | 42* | West Indies |
| Haris Rauf | 40 | New Zealand |
| Tim Southee | 38 | Pakistan |
| Shaheen Afridi | 35 | New Zealand |
The record-breaking moment came in the second over of his spell. Rashid trapped Roston Chase leg before wicket, claiming his 41st wicket against West Indies. With that dismissal, he went past Haris Rauf to become the bowler with the most wickets against one opponent in T20I history.
The milestone did not end there. The wicket was also Rashid’s 400th in T20 cricket, making him only the second England player after Chris Jordan to reach the landmark. It was a special double achievement on a big T20 World Cup stage for the leg-spinner.
Adil Rashid shines for England amid West Indies’ destructive batting
Adil Rashid continued his brilliance by dismissing the dangerous Rovman Powell, taking his tally to 42 wickets against West Indies. It was his second wicket of the match and came at a crucial time when West Indies were trying to accelerate.
He returned for his fourth over during the tense death overs, when England were under serious pressure. On a ground where bowlers struggled for control, Rashid delivered a tight five-run over and nearly picked up a third wicket.
He finished with outstanding figures of 2 for 16 in four overs at the Wankhede Stadium. After a difficult outing against Nepal earlier in the tournament, this performance showed his class and ability to step up on the biggest stage.
Adil Rashid’s legacy as an England white-ball great
Adil Rashid is already England’s all-time leading wicket-taker in T20Is with 152 wickets. His consistency over the years has made him a key part of England’s white-ball success and one of the most trusted bowlers in pressure situations.
With T20 World Cup 2026 possibly being his last edition of this tournament, the 37-year-old continues to perform at the highest level while breaking records. His achievements against West Indies and his 400 T20 wickets highlight his lasting impact and secure his legacy as a true England great.
