In an important update ahead of the 2026 season of the Pakistan Super League (PSL), New Zealand Cricket has allowed two of its key assistant coaches to take part in the tournament. The decision allows them to work with the franchise Islamabad United during the upcoming competition.
The PSL 2026 is scheduled to begin soon, and preparations are already underway after the PCB announced the official dates of the tournament.
PSL 2026 schedule out
It is important to note that PSL 2026 will take place across six venues from 26 March to 3 May. The announcement was made by the PCB as part of the preparations for the new season.
In addition, the upcoming edition will mark an important milestone for the tournament. For the first time, eight teams will take part in the PCB’s flagship event. Notably, the eight teams will compete during the 39-day event.
Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram join Islamabad United
New Zealand’s assistant coaches, Luke Ronchi and Jacob Oram, have received permission from New Zealand Cricket to work with Islamabad United in the PSL 2026. Notably, Ronchi will serve as the head coach of the franchise. Meanwhile, Oram will work as one of his assistant coaches in the team.
At present, Ronchi works as New Zealand’s batting coach, while Oram serves as the bowling coach of the national side. Earlier in January, Ronchi was officially announced as the head coach of Islamabad United. His connection with the team is not new. He previously played for the franchise for three seasons after making his tournament debut in the 2017-18 PSL season.

Coaches absence from international series
The PSL will continue until late April. As a result, both coaches will miss New Zealand’s upcoming international assignments. These include the series against South Africa as well as the tour of Bangladesh.
Despite this absence, the New Zealand Cricket board has shown support for their involvement in the tournament.
NZC explains the decision
Mike Sandle, New Zealand’s performance manager, explained the reason behind the decision. According to him, the board supports the coaching opportunities available to Ronchi and Oram, and the experience gained in the PSL could benefit the national team in the future.
"This is a great chance for Luke and Jake to further their coaching experience and grow their skills outside of the New Zealand cricket environment," Sandle said. "Just like our players, our coaches are in demand around the world and we believe Luke and Jake will not only personally benefit from their time at the PSL, but they will also be able to bring back knowledge and IP that can aid the BLACKCAPS and NZC in the future."
Sandle also confirmed the coaching arrangements for the upcoming international matches. Jonny Bassett-Graham and Graeme Aldridge will assist head coach Rob Walter during the series against South Africa. In addition, Brendon Donkers will join the support staff for the Bangladesh tour.
According to PSL 2026 schedule, each team will play 10 matches during the league stage. After that, the top four teams will qualify for the knockout stage.
The knockout round will include Qualifier 1, Eliminator, Qualifier 2, and the Final. These matches are scheduled from 28 April to 3 May. The final match will be played at the PCB headquarters, Gaddafi Stadium in Lahore, on Sunday, 3 May.
Meanwhile, Islamabad United will begin their campaign in the fourth match of the PSL. The game will take place at Arbab Niaz Stadium in Peshawar on 28 March.
