MI qualification scenario for IPL playoffs revealed [Source: AP]
Rohit Sharma is back in the Mumbai Indians playing XI, and with that, the team’s lost fortunes are also back as the former IPL champions demolished the Lucknow Super Giants in match 47 of the IPL 2026. In a high-scoring battle, the hosts triumphed and kept their playoff qualification hopes alive.
After winning the toss, MI put LSG into bat, and the decision initially backfired as Mitch Marsh, and Nicholas Pooran tore their attack down and added 90 runs inside the power play. However, once Pooran departed, the team crumbled and managed to score 228/5.
In reply, it was the R and R show, as Ryan Rickelton and Rohit Sharma blasted runs for fun, as the South African slammed 83 off 32 balls, and Rohit scored a quickfire fifty to steer the team past the winning line.
Despite the win, MI’s IPL 2026 playoff path is still tricky, and nearly impossible, but here is how the Mumbai Indians can still reach the knockout stages.
How can MI qualify for IPL 2026 playoffs after win vs LSG
The Mumbai Indians have lost 7 matches in the 10 games that they have played, and while their one foot is already out of the tournament, the MI fans would believe the team still has a chance, at least mathematically.
With this emphatic win, MI now has 6 points from 10 matches, but despite the win, their position in the points table has not changed. The team still remains second last, just above LSG.
MI has 4 games left, and they have no choice but to win all the four games with big margins. Against LSG, the team improved their net run-rate (-0.649), and the franchise has to win all the remaining matches by big margins as well.
If they win 4 on a trot, that would take them to 14 points; however, that might not be enough to secure a playoff berth if the net run-rate remains weak. To qualify, MI would need three of the current top four teams to dominate the rest of the league and have to ensure that not more than 4 teams cross the 14-point barrier.

MI's top performers in IPL 2026
It has been a topsy-turvy IPL season for the Mumbai Indians, and thus, there have not been too many top performers for the franchise.
With the bat, one clear name stands out: Ryan Rickelton. The South African was trusted with the opening duties, and he was pivotal for MI in the absence of Rohit Sharma. He has a strike rate of 177 in the tournament, and the batter also has a century to his name.
With the ball, not too many players have shone, but the Afghan spinner, Allah Ghazanfar, has been the standout, having picked wickets in almost every game that he has played in the ongoing IPL.
