In a major setback, young all-rounder Atharva Ankolekar will miss what would have been his first season with Mumbai Indians in IPL 2026. According to a report by The Times of India, the 25-year-old has undergone knee surgery after suffering a serious injury.
Notably, the franchise had bought him at his base price of ₹30 lakh in the December 2025 auction, so this opportunity was seen as a big career step. However, due to the surgery and recovery time, he will not be able to participate in the upcoming tournament.
Atharva Ankolekar suffers injury during Ranji Trophy match
The injury happened earlier this year during a Ranji Trophy match between Mumbai and Hyderabad at the Rajiv Gandhi International Stadium in January. While fielding near the boundary, Ankolekar slid to stop a ball but ended up tearing his knee meniscus.
As a result, he had to be stretchered off the field and was ruled out of the rest of the domestic season.
Doctors later confirmed Atharva Ankolekar had a “locked knee,” which required immediate surgery. The operation was performed by noted surgeon Dinshaw Pardiwalla at Kokilaben Dhirubhai Ambani Hospital. Therefore, his IPL debut plans were cut short due to unfortunate timing.
It is important to note that Atharva Ankoleka had represented India Under-19 in the U-19 World Cup 2020, showing early promise.

In T20 overall, Atharva Ankolekar has taken 19 wickets in 25 matches and also contributed quick runs with the bat. Because of these performances, experts believed he was ready for the IPL stage. Hence, missing this season feels like a lost opportunity for the Mumbai Indians' all-rounder.
Additionally, Atharva Ankolekar was an important player in Mumbai’s victory in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy during the 2024-25 season. He picked up crucial wickets and maintained a tight economy rate.
Furthermore, Atharva Ankolekar played a memorable cameo in the final against Madhya Pradesh in Bengaluru, scoring an unbeaten 16 runs off just six balls to help Mumbai win a thrilling match. Therefore, he had recently proven his ability to perform under pressure.
Mumbai Indians’ strategy in IPL 2026 auction
Meanwhile, Mumbai Indians had a quiet auction overall. Because they had the lowest remaining budget and had already retained most senior players, they bought only five new cricketers.
Notably, the only experienced international among them was Quinton de Kock, while the rest, including Ankolekar, were uncapped Indian players. As a result, his absence slightly reduces the Mumbai Indians’ bench strength in the spin-all-rounder role.

Even so, the five-time champions, led by captain Hardik Pandya, still have several star players. The squad features big names such as Rohit Sharma, Suryakumar Yadav, Jasprit Bumrah, and Trent Boult. Therefore, the team will still aim strongly for another title despite losing a promising newcomer.
IPL 2026 schedule update
Meanwhile, the IPL season itself will begin slightly later than first planned. The BCCI had earlier informed franchises that the tournament would start on March 26, 2026. However, according to ESPNcricinfo, the start date has been internally shifted to March 28, with the final scheduled for May 31.
