In a significant development, the Mohsin Naqvi-led PCB reportedly imposed sanctions on the Pakistan players after the team's T20 World Cup exit. Led by Salman Ali Agha, Pakistan failed to qualify for the semifinal of the competition despite registering a narrow five-run win over Sri Lanka in their final Super 8 match in Pallekele.

Although Sahibzada Farhan and Fakhar Zaman's blistering knocks ensured a daunting total for the Men in Green, the dismal outing of their bowling unit paved the way for their elimination.

Pakistan's topsy-turvy journey in T20 World Cup 2026

Under Salman Ali Agha's captaincy, Pakistan had a great start to the T20 World Cup 2026, securing crucial victories on two consecutive occasions. After Faheem Ashraf's timely cameo powered them to a thrilling win over the Netherlands, the Green shirts comfortably steamrolled the United States in their subsequent affair.

Although arch-rivals India crushed them by 61 runs, Pakistan rediscovered their mojo through a morale-boosting victory over Namibia in their final group-stage fixture.

However, the abandonment of their first Super 8 match and a close defeat to England made it significantly challenging for the Pakistani contingent to enter the semifinal.

As things panned out, the Men in Green couldn't achieve the Net Run Rate that they needed to pip New Zealand in the T20 World Cup semifinal race.

Mohsin Naqvi's PCB penalises Pakistan players for T20 World Cup mishap

After the Salman Ali Agha-led team failed to qualify for the T20 World Cup semifinal, PCB supremo Mohsin Naqvi expressed his dissatisfaction at the team's performance.

According to a report by renowned Pakistani journalist Saleem Khaliq, the PCB even went on to penalise the players, imposing a fine worth 5 million Pakistani rupees on each member of the team.

"The Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has imposed a fine of 5 million rupees on Pakistani cricketers for poor performance in the T20 World Cup: sources," Saleem Khaliq posted on X.

As reported earlier, Mohsin Naqvi had questioned the role of several senior players, including Babar Azam, who couldn't live up to the expectations in the T20 World Cup 2026.

Apart from Sahibzada Farhan, none of the Pakistan batters, including captain Salman Ali Agha, exhibited consistency in the tournament.

While Fakhar Zaman redeemed himself in the final Super 8 match, the likes of Babar, Usman Khan, Shadab Khan and Mohammad Nawaz failed to step up as a unit.

So, given that most of the senior players were far from their best, the PCB is expected to make a few bold calls when selecting the team for the upcoming ODI series against Bangladesh.

What's next for Pakistan?

After marking their exit from the T20 World Cup 2026, Pakistan are gearing up to face Bangladesh in a three-match ODI series.

As per the schedule revealed by the BCB, both teams will lock horns in three ODI matches at the iconic Sher-e-Bangla National Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.

The first match of the tour will be played on March 11, with the subsequent contests on the 13th and 15th of the month.
