The high-scoring IPL 2026 clash between Delhi Capitals and Punjab Kings at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on April 25 became a major talking point not just for the batting fireworks, but also for a series of costly fielding errors.
While Punjab Kings pulled off a historic chase of 265 runs, the spotlight has shifted toward multiple dropped catches and a growing debate around Delhi Capitals' substitution strategy, with Karun Nair at the centre of the discussion.
Shashank Singh's fielding blunder dents PBKS early
Punjab Kings fielder Shashank Singh once again had a forgettable outing in the field. The incident began early when he dropped a straightforward catch of KL Rahul near the boundary ropes.
The mistake came in the third over when KL Rahul mistimed a shot off Arshdeep Singh, and Shashank attempted a catch but failed to hold on.

His errors added pressure on Punjab Kings early in the innings, continuing a troubling pattern from the previous match, where he had already dropped multiple catches against LSG.
KL Rahul's record-breaking knock goes in vain
The match turned into a batting spectacle as Delhi Capitals posted a massive 264/2, powered by a stunning unbeaten 152 off 67 balls from KL Rahul. This marked the highest individual score by an Indian batter in IPL history.
He was well supported by Nitish Rana, who scored 91 off 44 balls, with the duo building a massive 220-run partnership.
However, Punjab Kings responded with one of the greatest chases in IPL history. Openers Prabhsimran Singh and Priyansh Arya provided a flying start, before Shreyas Iyer took control with a match-winning unbeaten 71 off 36 balls.
It is vital to note that Karun Nair dropped two catches of Shreyas Iyer.
R Ashwin backs Karun Nair, criticises DC tactical decisions
After the match, former India spinner R Ashwin came out in support of Karun Nair, who was heavily criticised for dropping crucial catches of Shreyas Iyer during the match.
Speaking on his YouTube channel, R Ashwin suggested that the blame being placed solely on Nair was unfair.
He also explained that Delhi Capitals' substitution strategy may have contributed to the confusion on the field. According to him, KL Rahul’s exit from wicketkeeping duties due to dehydration led to multiple changes in field placements.
DC brought in Tristan Stubbs and later Karun Nair as substitutes, a move he felt was not ideal in such a situation.
R Ashwin questioned whether a specialist wicketkeeper like Abhishek Porel could have been a better option.
“Let me tell you about Karun Nair’s situation. When a player knows they aren’t in the playing XI, they usually find out at least a day in advance. Players who are dropped or rested often hit the gym or do extra training on match days to stay fit, knowing the next day might be a travel day with late-night flights and limited practice time," Ravichandran Ashwin said.
"So, maybe Karun Nair was mentally “switched off” though that’s probably the wrong word, but he might have been fatigued from training. I’m not making excuses, but for a substitute to suddenly step into the intensity of the game, these things can happen,” Ashwin added.
“He dropped one catch, and his confidence just plummeted after that. Karun is actually a fabulous fielder; I’ve seen him be very reliable in first-class and red-ball cricket, especially in close-in positions. I’ve rarely seen him drop catches like that, but today was just one of those days,” Ashwin added.
It is important to mention that Delhi Capitals will play their next match against RCB on April 27, 2026.
