In what comes as a massive revelation, West Indies' all-rounder, Jason Holder, has suddenly retired from ODI cricket. The former captain has been in exceptional form, especially in T20 cricket, in the last two years.

Although the Caribbean is regarded as the land of pace-bowling all-rounders, Holder's replacement would be hard to find even for the two-time champions.

Having said that, Cricket West Indies had moved on from Holder in the 50-over format, as he last represented in ODIs during the 2023 World Cup qualifiers.

Daren Sammy announces shocking ODI retirement for Jason Holder

While talking on the Wisden Cricket podcast, West Indies head coach Daren Sammy revealed Jason Holder's secretive retirement from ODI cricket. Meanwhile, announcing the retirement news, the West Indies team boss also stated that the all-rounder is still certainly in the mix for Tests.

“Jason (Holder) is still in the mix for Tests. I know, he has retired from ODI cricket. Test cricket, for sure. He has spoken about his interest, and he is obviously our frontline all-rounder,” Daren Sammy declared on the Wisden Cricket podcast.

As his ODI career has come to an end, Holder played 138 matches in the format for the Windies, racking up 2237 runs and taking 159 wickets, including 12 half-centuries and five four-fers. He debuted in ODIs in 2013 and played a vital role during the 2015 and 2019 ODI World Cup editions.

As the West Indies missed out on the 2023 WC in India, the all-rounder was vital during the WC Qualifiers, scoring 144 runs and scalping six wickets. Moreover, it turned out to be the last appearance in the format for the Barbadian.

Why are West Indies ignoring Jason Holder in Tests?

Jason Holder stood out as one of the best performers in the 2026 T20 World Cup for West Indies. He scored 141 runs at a strike rate of 175 and took 10 wickets, turning matches around on multiple occasions.

Since then, the pace-bowling all-rounder has played two T20Is vs SL but has not featured in Tests since August two years ago, linking his recent form to his Test absence. In September 2025, he had expressed his desire to play the longest format for the Windies.

So far, the former Test captain has represented the national team in 69 Test matches, scoring 3073 runs and taking 162 wickets. He is the only Windies cricketer to achieve the combo of 3000+ runs and 150+ wickets in Tests, after Sir Garfield Sobers.

However, the West Indies, at the moment, are opting for frontline fast bowlers, who can rattle any batting order with their pace, instead of Holder, who mainly leans on accurate line-and-length.

How big a miss Jason Holder will be in WC 2027?

Jason Holder is currently serving in the MLC, where he recently equalled Lasith Malinga as joint-fifth place for most four-fers in T20 cricket. Additionally, he is an apt batter to bat anywhere from number 4 to 7.

The West Indies will miss an all-rounder of Holder’s calibre in the ODI format, as they are preparing for the 2027 World Cup, especially as the tournament will be played in the South African continent.

Nevertheless, the Windies will begin a new chapter in the ODI series at home vs New Zealand from July 12.
