Jake Weatherald seems to have found some solace after getting dropped from the Australian squad earlier this week. After failing to put up a match-winning effort for Australia against Bangladesh in Darwin, the cricketer was replaced by comeback man Matt Renshaw for the impending series-decider in Mackay.

Since getting excluded from the national line-up, Weatherald has now hopped on to England’s domestic circuit in a bid to find some runs under his belt. With his latest signing, the 31-year-old is now scheduled to play the initial fixtures of next year’s 2027 County Championship in England.

Jake Weatherald to play County Championship in Ashes prep

Jake Weatherald has signed a deal with the Warwickshire cricket club after getting dropped from the Australian squad for the upcoming second Test against Bangladesh in Mackay. As per the signing, the 31-year-old will play the early stages of the 2027 County Championship in England next year.

Upon joining Warwickshire, Weatherald said “I'm thrilled to be joining Warwickshire for the 2027 season. Edgbaston is one of the great grounds in world cricket and the opportunity to represent such a prestigious county was something I couldn't pass up.”

Notably, Jake’s upcoming County stint holds much significance for the elegant left-handed top-order batter. In search of runs in a bid to regain national call-up, a prolific County season might help him to jump back into selection contention, considering the 2027 Ashes series is also set to be played in English conditions next year.

What is Jake Weatherald’s record in County cricket?

Jake Weatherald has previously played County cricket for the Leicestershire cricket club. He made his County debut just earlier this year during the 2026 County Championship Division One in England.

In nine innings spanning six first-class matches, the prolific top-order batter plundered 483 runs at an astonishing average of 60.37 and with a motoring strike rate of above 80.

He tonked three fifties and a century in the process, which featured an epic 104 against Glamorgan in Cardiff back in April.

Why was Jake Weatherald dropped from Australia squad?

Jake Weatherald made his Test debut for Australia last November in the first match of the 2025-26 Ashes series ‘Down Under’. Across all five matches, the cricketer minted just 201 runs in 10 innings at a dismal average of 22.33.

Moreover, the left-hander managed to chart just one half-century throughout the two-month series at home.

Despite his below-par performance, Weatherald was selected in Australian playing XI for the series-opening first Test against Bangladesh in Darwin this month. He was dismissed by Hasan Mahmud in both innings of the match to aggregate just 23 runs combined.

Averaging just 20.36 after playing six Tests for Australia, the selection committee dropped him for the series-decider in Mackay in favour of comeback man Matt Renshaw.

Incidentally, he was dropped shortly after cricketer-turned-commentator Ricky Ponting advised the Australian team management to bring in a fresh top three during his on-air outburst over Australia’s underwhelming performance.
