Australia have reacted to their embarrassing defeat against Bangladesh by making a significant change to their Test squad ahead of the second match of the series. The hosts were beaten by nine wickets in Darwin on Sunday, August 16.

Bangladesh produced a memorable performance to record only their second Test victory over Australia. The Bangla Tigers also became just the third Asian side, after India and Pakistan, to win a Test on Australian soil.

With Australia now needing victory in the second Test to prevent Bangladesh from completing a historic series win, the selectors have included Matt Renshaw in place of Jake Weatherald for the AUS vs BAN 2nd Test.

Jake Weatherald Makes Way As Matt Renshaw Earns Test Return For  AUS vs BAN 2nd Test

In a significant development, opening batter Jake Weatherald has been left out of the squad after a difficult outing in Darwin. The 31-year-old registered scores of 23 and a duck across the two innings.

It is important to note that Matt Renshaw has been included for the AUS vs BAN 2nd Test in place of Jake Weatherald.

"Yeah, there was some change to Jake in terms of where he lined up and his movement patterns," coach Andrew McDonald said of Weatherald.

"It's always hard to critique small sample sizes on whether it holds up (at international level). He dragged one on and drove at one in the first innings and was dismissed; it's probably harder with that smaller sample size to say, 'Yep, that's going to hold up under pressure'. But there was some change though."

When Was The Last Time Matt Renshaw Played Test For Australia?

It is vital to note that Matt Renshaw last played a Test match for Australia three years ago. He last represented Australia in the longest format during the 2023 tour of India. Overall, he has represented Australia in 14 matches and made 645 runs at an average of 29.32 and a strike rate of 42.32.

Although he might have represented Australia in a Test a long time ago, the fact remains that he performed well in the Sheffield 2025-26. He made 499 runs in 10 innings at an average of 49.90 and a strike rate of 50.10, with three centuries.

Now, with Matt Renshaw included in the squad, there are strong chances that he might open with Travis Head at the top of the order in Mackay.

Marnus Labuschagne Retained His Place For AUS vs BAN 2nd Test

It is worth noting that Marnus Labuschagne has retained his place for the AUS vs BAN 2nd Test. Several questions and fingers are also pointed at his place after his poor performance, as he managed only 1 and 31 in the 1st Test.

"Up until the point he got out [in his second innings against Bangladesh], you'd sit there and say [that] he was looking good, moving well, clipping off his pads and getting back through the ball down the ground," said Andrew McDonald.

"It's easy for me to sit here and try to defend that. But ultimately, it's 31. It's not a big score. He's lacked runs. He feels that. We feel that. We're working incredibly hard as a coaching group... we've got to get the best out of Marn as well.
