India Women suffered a crushing defeat to South Africa in match number 18 of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup in Manchester on Sunday, June 21.
Despite gaining an upper hand over the Proteas around the halfway stage of the run chase, a thunderous defiance from legendary all-rounder Marizanne Kapp tilted the tide in her team’s favor.
With team registering its first defeat of the tournament after recording successive wins over Pakistan and Netherlands Women, the road to qualifying for the semifinal has now become significantly tougher for the ‘Women in Blue’.
Here, we take a look at India’s semifinal qualification scenario after their latest setback against the Proteas.
India’s qualification scenario for T20 Women’s World Cup 2026 semifinals
The race for securing a spot in the semifinal of the 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup has become substantially difficult for the India Women’s cricket team.
Under the leadership of Harmanpreet Kaur, the ‘Women in Blue’ cannot afford another hiccup at any stage in the remainder of the tournament.
For starters, Team India needs to win each of its remaining two fixtures. In doing so, Harmanpreet Kaur and co. will finish the Group 1 stage of the T20 World Cup with eight points from five games.

India also need to hope for South Africa to lose at least one of its remaining two matches. In such a scenario, Team India Women will be certain to secure a top two finish in Group 1, also dubbed as the ‘Group of Death’ by many cricket fans and experts.
However, the Proteas Women will certainly fancy their chances against lower-ranked teams like Netherlands and Bangladesh going ahead.
On the other hand, India’s remaining fixtures are against Bangladesh and ICC heavyweights Australia. It is worth noting that Australia is not only the most successful team in the history of T20 World Cups with six titles, but they are also the only unbeaten side from Group 1 this tournament.
At the moment, Australia Women are placed at the top of the Group 1 points table with six points courtesy of three wins from three games. They are followed by recently-jolted India at number two with two wins and a defeat from as many matches.
South Africa and Bangladesh, also with two wins each, are placed third and fourth respectively on the six-team standings. Winless Pakistan and Netherlands have been eliminated from the competition.

Interestingly, India’s top-performers with the bat and ball off late also happens to be the leading run-maker and the most successful bowler of the ongoing 2026 ICC Women’s T20 World Cup.
Indian opener and vice-captain Smriti Mandhana has notched up 159 runs in just three innings to be placed at the top of the run-scoring charts of the tournament, as of June 21.
Her teammate and ace spinner Shree Charani has picked up 10 wickets in just three innings to top the bowling table. Charani collected three wickets each against South Africa and Pakistan, and snared a match-winning four-wicket haul against the Netherlands a few days ago.
