Vaibhav Sooryavanshi blew away Sri Lanka A with a scorching 29-ball 94 in the final of the ‘A team’ tri-series on Sunday, June 21.

Batting first at the Rangiri Dambulla International Stadium a week after his intense verbal face-off with the hosts, the 15-year-old launched 10 boundaries and eight huge sixes

Sooryavanshi’s innings ended up laying out pathway for a dominant Indian win as the ‘Men in Blue’ lifted the tri-series trophy.

Fittingly bagging the ‘Player of the Match’ award, the dynamic youngster also staked his claim in India’s ODI team while speaking with the commentator during the post-match presentation ceremony.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi claims his place in India ODI team

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi was recently selected in Team India’s T20I squad following his IPL 2026 riches for the Rajasthan Royals. However, the 15-year-old also seems to be fully prepared to play 50-over internationals for the Indian team.

While speaking with the Sri Lankan commentator during the post-match presentation ceremony after the final, the youngster was asked if he had learned something from the 50-over tri-series, considering he mostly plays T20 cricket back home.

Sooryavanshi smilingly responded that he has also played plenty of 50-overs cricket, but fans only seem to know about his IPL T20 exploits.

Indirectly claiming a place in India’s ODI squad, he said, “I have learned a lot, but I have played plenty of 50-overs cricket before (smiles). Maybe not many people know about it. But playing on different conditions, different pitches was a learning experience and I had fun in the series.”

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s track record in 50-overs cricket

Consistent with Vaibhav Sooryavanshi’s claims, the youngster has indeed played enough 50-overs cricket, and his track record warrants a place in the Indian national side.

Back in December last year, the then 14-year-old mounted 190 runs off just 84 balls in a single Vijay Hazare Trophy game for the Bihar team, launching 16 fours and 15 sixes in the process.

Earlier in the same month, the blistering left-handed opener obliterated the UAE U19 team in Dubai during the 2025 U19 Asia Cup. The cricketer slapped 171 runs off just 95 balls in the game with nine boundaries and 14 huge sixes.

In February this year, Sooryavanshi routed England in the final of the 2026 ICC U19 World Cup in Zimbabwe.

The left-hander whacked 175 runs off just 80 balls on the big day, as India clinched the world title for the record sixth time. The youngster fittingly bagged the ‘Player of the Match’ and the ‘Player of the Tournament’ awards.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi douses Sri Lanka A in tri-series final

In the final of the ‘A team’ tri-series in Dambulla against Sri Lanka A, Sooryavanshi smashed 94 runs from just 29 balls with 10 boundaries and eight sixes.

His thunderous top-order knock, coupled with a half-century from captain Tilak Varma and fiery finishing touches from Anukul Roy, catapulted India A to a monumental 377-9 from 50 overs.

In response, Sri Lanka folded up for 311 courtesy of three-wicket hauls from Yash Thakur and Vipraj Nigam.

Sooryavanshi to tour Ireland, England for T20I series

After winning the ‘Orange Cap’ this IPL 2026 season, Vaibhav Sooryavanshi has now been fast-tracked into India’s T20I side by the BCCI selection committee.

The youngster is set to fly to Ireland this week alongside Team India players to play a two-match T20I series in the country. The tour will be succeeded by a five-match T20I challenge in England next month.
