The India Women vs South Africa Women matches are always a battle between two of the strongest sides in world cricket, with both teams often bringing out their very best on the field.
As the Women's T20 World Cup 2026 action moved to Emirates Old Trafford, Manchester, on June 21, Harmanpreet Kaur's side locked horns with Laura Wolvaardt's South Africa in a crucial group-stage encounter.
However, things did not go as smoothly as India would have expected, as the Women in Blue lost a key wicket inside the powerplay.
Smriti Mandhana, India's star opener, was dismissed by South African all-rounder Marizanne Kapp, and the wicket sparked attention not only because of the dismissal itself but also due to Kapp's aggressive celebration.
India Suffer Early Blow Despite Positive Start
India entered the contest full of confidence after winning both of their previous group-stage matches.
After winning the toss and opting to bat first, the Indian openers Smriti Mandhana and Shafali Verma walked out with the intention of providing a solid start. However, South Africa struck early through the brilliance of Kapp.
Marizanne Kapp Tricks Smriti Mandhana To A Dismissal
After a cautious beginning from Mandhana, Kapp produced a clever delivery to outfox the left-handed batter. On the final ball of the third over, Kapp bowled from around the wicket and delivered a ball outside off stump that angled back in.
Mandhana stepped across her stumps and attempted to lap the ball over fine leg. However, she misjudged the length completely. The ball sneaked past her attempted shot and crashed into the stumps, leaving the Indian opener stunned.
Disappointment was clearly visible on Mandhana's face as she realised the mistake. The dismissal handed South Africa a massive breakthrough at a crucial stage of the innings.

Kapp Fiercely Roars At Mandhana
What followed immediately after the wicket caught the attention. Marizanne Kapp let out a loud roar in celebration, showcasing her emotions after dismissing one of India's most dangerous batters.
The South African all-rounder celebrated passionately, screaming in delight as her teammates joined in. It was a fiery send-off that highlighted just how important Smriti Mandhana's wicket was in the context of the match.
Mandhana, meanwhile, had little choice but to walk back to the pavilion after scoring 17 runs from 12 deliveries.
Shafali Verma Falls Soon After
The dismissal of Smriti Mandhana triggered another setback for India. Aggressive opener Shafali Verma, who had looked in excellent touch, was removed shortly afterwards by Shabnim Ismail.
Verma had raced to 31 runs from just 15 deliveries and was putting pressure on the South African bowling attack.
However, on the fourth ball of the final over of the powerplay, she attempted to take on a short delivery from Ismail. The shot did not come off as intended, resulting in her dismissal. With both openers back in the pavilion, India found themselves at 59/2 at the end of six overs.
South Africa Keep the Pressure On
At the time of writing, Yastika Bhatia and Jemimah Rodrigues were at the crease, attempting to rebuild the innings for India.
South Africa's bowling attack had done an impressive job of maintaining pressure. Marizanne Kapp and Shabnim Ismail led the charge brilliantly with disciplined spells, while Nonkululeko Mlaba also contributed with a balanced and controlled approach.
Chloe Tryon, however, endured a difficult outing, conceding 17 runs in her only over as the Indian batters targeted her whenever opportunities arose.
