India's recent achievements in women's cricket have largely come in the longer formats. Under Harmanpreet Kaur's leadership, the team won four of its last five Tests and also lifted its maiden Women's ODI World Cup title.
However, their performances in T20Is have not matched those standards, with India failing to progress beyond the league stage at the 2024 and 2026 Women's T20 World Cups.
India Women head coach Amol Muzumdar feels that a separate group of players for T20I cricket could become a reality in the near future, much like the approach followed by the Indian men's team.
BCCI CoE scanning talents to form specialist India Women team
Muzumdar explained that the groundwork was already underway, pointing towards the quality of young cricketers coming through the Centre of Excellence (CoE). The India U-15 and U-19 camps, according to him, have shown encouraging signs about the future of the women's game.
“We’re already on that path. There’s some amazing talent coming through. The talent I’ve seen at the CoE (Centre of Excellence), where they hold the India Under-15 and U-19 camps, is terrific.
The work at the CoE is superb. The camps are a good reflection of where Indian women’s cricket is at the moment. I’m sure it’s in a healthy state,” he said at an event organised by the Sports Journalists’ Association of Mumbai (SJAM) at the MIG Club on Saturday.
Muzumdar also highlighted how younger players are approaching cricket differently. He believes their understanding of fitness, nutrition and fielding could help them adapt more naturally to the requirements of modern T20 cricket.
“They are tuned in. They are professionals. Even the U-15 players are professionals. They understand the nutrition aspect of the game. They understand the fitness aspect of the game.
They understand fielding. They’re terrific fielders. They’re good athletes. They understand that athleticism is key in cricket. You’ll soon find that when the younger generation takes over, India will be in a good state,” he said.
India Women’s T20I performances in the last two years
India's women's team has enjoyed a strong run in T20Is over the last two years, winning 28 of their 40 matches and losing just 12. This gives them a win percentage of 70% and a loss percentage of 30%.
With a win-loss ratio of 2.33, India have maintained a positive record across conditions, including 10 wins in 11 home matches. Their overall batting average stands at 30.77, with a run rate of 8.88 per over. Notably, India also won the T20 Women’s Asia Cup this year, under Harmanpreet Kaur.
