2025 was a great year for Indian fans. The Men’s team started the year on a high, ending a 12-year-long drought by lifting the Champions Trophy. The Women’s team too joined the fun and silenced their critics by conquering their first-ever ODI World Cup on November 2 when they beat South Africa.

The moment was written in gold because the Harmanpreet Kaur-led side were all over the moon after the win. It was the biggest moment in women’s cricket, and the celebrations lasted for a long time. Indian PM Narendra Modi felicitated the title-winning team, and even the state CMs announced top prizes for the girls who made the entire nation proud.

India’s Women's Team Nominated For Laureus Award?

In a significant development, India’s title-winning run has been acknowledged by the Laureus committee, and the 15-member squad has been nominated for the prestigious award. For the unversed, the award is also dubbed, as the ‘Oscar of sports’ where the athletes and teams from all across the globe, and sports are honoured.

Therefore, it is a huge honour and achievement for the Indian women’s team to be nominated for the Laureus Sports Team of the Year category. Here are the complete nominations.

India's Successful World Cup Campaign Honoured Globally

As mentioned above, it is a huge honour for the Indian team, who had a great run during the World Cup. Notably, the Women in Blue had a slow start to their campaign and had to wait till their last group-stage game to qualify for the knock-outs.

Out of the seven games, India women won three games and qualified after finishing fourth on the list. In the semi-finals, the Harmanpreet Kaur met Australia, whom they beat by 5 wickets and chased down 338, their biggest win in World Cup history.

In the finals, India met South Africa and defended 298, courtesy Deepti Sharma masterclass who picked up a five-wicket haul.

Australian Team Honoured in 2002 By Laureus

Notably, the Indian team have never been recognised by the Laureus award and Australia cricket team is the only cricket team to have won the prestigious award. Back in 2002, the Laureus team handed the award to Ricky Ponting's team for extending their winning streak to 16 Test wins.

Since then, it has been a long wait for cricket fans to see the sport getting recognised and honoured on a global platform.

Sachin Tendulkar honoured by Laureus In 2020

Indian cricket legend Sachin Tendulkar was honoured with the prestigious Laureus Sporting Moment of the Year 2000-2020 award in Berlin on February 17, 2020. The award recognized his 2011 ICC World Cup victory lap, titled "Carried on the Shoulders of a Nation," as the top, unifying moment in sports from the past two decades.
