For a man who never wore the India cap, Amol Muzumdar has become one of Indian cricket’s most influential minds. Once celebrated as Mumbai’s “run machine” and touted as the next big thing after Tendulkar, Muzumdar’s story is not of what he missed—but what he made of it. In October 2023, the Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) appointed him as the head coach of the India women’s national cricket team, a move that would quietly transform the trajectory of women’s cricket in the country. Two years later, in 2025, under his meticulous guidance, India lifted their maiden ICC Women’s ODI World Cup — a historic moment that reflected not just the team’s brilliance, but Muzumdar’s calm and cerebral influence.

Born on 11 November 1974, in Mumbai, Amol Anil Muzumdar was a product of the city’s famed cricketing nursery, Sharadashram Vidyamandir — the same school that produced Sachin Tendulkar and Vinod Kambli. Coached by the legendary Ramakant Achrekar, Muzumdar’s cricketing education was grounded in discipline and patience. He announced his arrival in the domestic circuit in style, scoring a mammoth 260 on debut for Mumbai in 1993–94 — a world record at the time for a first-class debutant. Yet, despite being one of the most prolific run-getters in Indian domestic history and holding the record for most Ranji Trophy runs, an India call-up never came.

What might have been an unfulfilled dream of playing became the foundation of an exceptional coaching career. Muzumdar transitioned seamlessly into mentoring, drawing on his vast domestic experience and analytical eye. He began as a batting consultant with the Netherlands team in 2013, before moving on to key roles with India’s Under-19 and Under-23 teams. His ability to simplify technique and build mental resilience soon caught wider attention.

In the IPL, Muzumdar became an integral part of the Rajasthan Royals’ think tank, serving as their batting coach for multiple seasons. His calm presence in the dugout and reputation as a “players’ coach” made him popular among youngsters and seniors alike. Short coaching stints with the South African national team and the Mumbai senior side further enhanced his credentials.

When he took charge of the Indian women’s team, Muzumdar brought a modern yet grounded approach — combining tactical depth with empathy. He emphasised intent, fielding excellence, and adaptability, helping the side evolve from a talented group into a well-oiled unit. Under him, players like Smriti Mandhana, Shafali Verma, and Deepti Sharma flourished, while a new crop of fearless cricketers emerged.

The crowning moment came in 2025, when India’s women lifted the ICC Women’s ODI World Cup — their first-ever global title. It was not just a victory of skill, but of mindset. Muzumdar’s imprint was visible in every department: clarity of roles, calm under pressure, and the belief that India belonged at the top.

Today, Amol Muzumdar stands as a symbol of cricket’s quiet redemption — a player denied his due who found his purpose as a coach. His journey from the maidans of Mumbai to the World Cup podium is proof that some stories don’t need a Test cap to be complete.
