Brandon King made a memorable contribution to West Indies' eight-wicket victory over Bangladesh in the first Test at the Sher-e-Bangla National Cricket Stadium in Mirpur, Dhaka.
The visitors chased down a target of 170 runs on the fourth day, October 31, to take a 1-0 lead in the series. While Jomel Warrican stole the show with nine wickets in the match, King produced an unbeaten fourth-innings knock that not only guided West Indies home but also helped him achieve a significant milestone in the country's Test cricket history.
Brandon King breaks Chris Gayle's record to etch new milestone for West Indies
Brandon King has surpassed Chris Gayle among other Caribbeans to register the highest individual score by a West Indies batter in a successful fourth-innings run chase against Bangladesh in Test cricket.
The right-handed batter remained unbeaten on 81 off 115 deliveries, striking 10 boundaries and a six to guide his side to victory in Mirpur.
Before King's knock, Gayle held the record with an unbeaten 37 against Bangladesh in 2002. However, King's 81* has now taken the benchmark considerably higher.
John Campbell, who also featured in the successful chase, occupies the second position on the list with his 49-run contribution in the same innings.
Highest Individual Scores By West Indies Openers In Successful Fourth-Innings Chases Against Bangladesh:
- Brandon King – 81*
- John Campbell – 49
- Chris Gayle – 37*
- Wavell Hinds – 26
- Kraigg Brathwaite – 20
- Kieran Powell – 9*
King had a relatively quiet first innings in the match, managing just 15 runs off 20 deliveries before being dismissed by Hasan Mahmud. However, he made amends in the second innings with a much more assured performance. He opened alongside Campbell and helped West Indies get off to a flying start in the chase.
The opening pair added 112 runs for the first wicket, with Campbell contributing 49 off 55 deliveries. King brought up his half-century in 68 balls and continued to bat confidently even after Campbell departed.
Brandon King redeems Test struggles with Bangladesh heroics
The innings against Bangladesh also offered King an opportunity to put his disappointing previous Test assignment behind him. His last appearance in the longest format came during West Indies' tour of Pakistan in July-August 2026, where he struggled to make an impact with the bat.
Across four innings in the two-match series, King managed just 63 runs at an average of 15.75. His scores read 12 and 5 in the first Test, followed by 46 before getting ruled out due to injury.
Now, with this performance, King has given the West Indies management another reason to back him. More importantly, he has turned a difficult Test comeback into a memorable personal milestone, helping the visitors secure a commanding win.
