Marnus Labuschagne registered yet another failure against South Africa, this time in the decisive Australian innings of the series at Cape Town. Batting at number three, a horrendous leave by Labuschagne made him Australia’s second casualty of the run chase inside the opening over of the innings itself.
Labuschagne, whose place in the Australian squad for the tour of South Africa was widely disputed by experts and critics for many weeks, eventually concluded the series with mere 131 runs to his name from six innings spanning three Tests at a dismal average of 21.83.
Fans are now predicting a retirement possibility for the cricketer, as the 32-year-old just spent yet another Test series without getting a century.
Fans roast Marnus Labuschagne, predict early retirement
Marnus Labuschagne hit just one four before getting trapped by Kagiso Rabada in the first over of Australia’s second innings in the third Test in Cape Town in their attempted pursuit of 288 runs.
Extending his dry run with the bat, cricket fans are predicting an early retirement for the 32-year-old, at least from Test cricket. Here is a look at some of the fans roasting Labuschagne amid his repeated struggles with the bat.
"Thank you Marnus Labuschagne for your services to Australian Cricket. Your international career is over. OUT YOU GO." - @TUnlimitedd
"I think, it's over now for Marnus Labuschagne. 💔 Big day today for him but once again he has thrown his wicket away."- @Saabir_Saabu01
"Even his best fans will now know this. This has to be the end of Marnus Labuschagne’s test career."- @AMP86793444
"Kagiso Rabada might have ended a career here.🫣 Marnus Labuschagne falls for 4."- @weshalltalkcric
In desperate need of runs, the Australian top-order batter was dismissed by Kagiso Rabada in the final ball of the first over as the visitors crashed to 5-2 in their tall chase of 288 runs to win the series.
He offered no shot to Rabada in what might be considered an atrocious leave against the new ball, especially on the Newlands surface on Day 5 of a Test.
Marnus Labuschagne goes 49 innings, eight series without a Test century
In one of the worst career downfalls in recent memory, Marnus Labuschagne has now gone 49 Test innings without scoring a century. The cricketer recorded his previous Test century way back in mid-2023 during the 2023 Ashes series in England, i.e., about eight Test series ago.
Moreover, the elegant right-handed batter struck 10 centuries in the first 30 Tests of his career, and just one in his next 38 to get to 11 hundreds and 25 fifties in his 68-match journey for Australia so far.
While his selection in the Australian squad for the tour of South Africa was already considered a controversial choice, it remains to be seen if the team management and Australian selectors continue to back the top-order batter as they inch closer to the WTC 2027 date.
